History / Biographical
The Ottawa Jewish Historical Society was founded in 1966, but did not become active until 1971. In 1969, a History and Archives Committee was established under the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir. Beginning in the early 1970’s both groups began to actively collect and preserve the general archival material of the Jewish community of Ottawa. In May 1974, the History and Archives Committee merged with the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society. Initially the OJHS did not serve as an archival repository; rather it served as a collecting agency for records, depositing the bulk of their holdings with the Public Archives of Canada (now Library and Archives Canada). The OJHS was first chaired by Max Bookman, followed by Dr. Abram Slone, who assumed the chair position in an acting role until Michael Freedman was appointed in 1970. Mrs. Celia Bookman was secretary. Mr. Hy Hochberg was the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir co-coordinator. In 1971, a small room was set aside at the Jewish Community Centre at 151 Chapel Street where material was identified and organized before deposit with the Public Archives of Canada. In the spring of 1984, the Society received an office and a larger storage space in the JCC. Sid Green became the next chairman in 1974, followed by Hugo Levendel on July 9, 1980; Ben Karp on August 27, 1986; Lawrence Freedman on April 27, 1992, John Holzman, August 2006; Ian Sadinsky, February 2011. Anna Bilsky, 2016 and current President Teri Levine, 2018. The Historical Society’s primary purpose was to collect, preserve and make available for use the documents and archival material of the Jewish community in Ottawa; a mission that would become the basis for the mandate of the Ottawa Jewish Archives. Shirley Berman was appointed Archivist by the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir in 1972, a role which she maintained until her retirement in the fall of 1998. In this role Mrs. Berman and the OJHS saved important documents, collected and copied early photographs, and recorded oral histories. These materials would become the foundation of the Ottawa Jewish Archives collections. On October 7, 1998, the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa, under Barbara Farber’s term as President, assumed responsibility for the Ottawa Jewish Archives. With the interest and support of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society, Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir, Archives Association of Ontario, and a loyal group of volunteers, the Ottawa Jewish Archives was able to expand, publicize its activities and gradually organize the holdings according to archival standards. In the fall of 1999, the Ottawa Jewish Archives moved to its new location in the Jewish Community Centre in the Joseph and Rose Ages Family Building in the west end of Ottawa. Archival facilities are modern with convenient shelving in a new vault. The Society’s transfer was completed by October 2000. In 2004, the OJHS began recording eulogies at funerals and donating copies to the Ottawa Jewish Archives and the family of the deceased. The first eulogy was recorded on July 27, 2004 at the funeral of Hy Soloway. The archives operated under the direction of Dawn Logan from 1999 - 2008. Marcia Rak was Assistant Archivist from 1999 - 2007, followed by Laurie Dougherty from 2007 - 2008. In January 2009, Laurie Dougherty became archivist upon Dawn Logan's retirement. Laurie left the position in July 2012. Emily Leonoff was archivist from August 2012 to August 2014. Saara Mortensen was Archivist from September 2014 - 2018. Zoe Thurmston was archivist from 2018 - 2019. The present archivist, Teigan Goldsmith, began in November 2019. Elaine Brodsky was Secretary until January 2021. Teigan Goldsmith became Executive Director in January 2021.
Custodial History
Files came from several sources at various times including Lawrence Freedman, John Holzman and Elaine Brodsky - secretary of the OJHS until 2021.
Notes
1. Ongoing accruals expected. 2. Gap in minutes between 1966 and 1969 are a result of no activity, not a loss of records. (S. Berman - 2010).
