- Date Digitized: February 16, 2021 Digitized by: Grace Turner Number of Cassettes: 1 Subject: Moses Bilsky Interviewer: N/A Date: July 18, 2001 Interview Location: Ottawa, ON Length of Time: Side A (47:11) Side B (12:43) -The lecture circuit is introduced by giving background on Ben Karp, the former president of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society as this event is part of the Ben Karp Lecture Series. Ben Karp was born in 1918 and grew up working as a newsboy while going to York Street Public School and the School of Commerce. He married Etta Shulman before the war and during the war he served in the Algonquin Regiment in Holland. Ben Karp was the OJHS president from 1986 to 1991, during his time as president he popularized the public speaking program and was a spokesperson for the society. -Betsy Rigal then introduces the speakers Anna Bilsky and Millie Bilsky. She mentions their parents Esther and Lawrence Bilsky. She recalls their wedding and the loving family home they created for their children. She elaborates on Millie and Anna’s accomplishments before they begin their lecture. -Anna and Millie begin by thanking those who helped them with their research. -Moses Bilsky was born in 1829 in Kovna, Lithuania. His mother passed away shortly after his sister's birth and his father Ely (?) then decided to move the family to North America. They originally came to New York but quickly moved and settled in Kemptville. -Moses was 14 upon his arrival in Kemptville. He often travelled into Bytowne (now Ottawa) for business and leisure. -At the age of 28 Moses moved to New York but in 1857 he returned to Ottawa. -In 1861 he travelled to Victoria BC to work at the Cariboo Gold Fields. He spent one winter at The WIlliams Creek Mine. He quickly saved up money to open his own business the following season providing provisions to miners. -He then rode horseback from Victoria to San Francisco. He was recruited into a prospecting company in Central America, unfortunately it turned out to be a scheme for gun running so he left. -Back in San Francisco he enlisted during the Civil War to a unit known as Abraham Lincoln’s Guard. Anna tells a story of him during the riots of 1863 following Abraham Lincoln’s assassination. -In 1867 he returned to Ottawa and opened a Jewelry and Pawn shop. -In 1874 he met his wife Pauline in New York and they were married later that year. Anna tells a story about Moses winning over Paulines parents. -By 1890 Moses jewelry store was a success and he was one of the largest jewelry retailers in Eastern Canada. Anna talks of his watches and shows an image of his storefront. -The jewelry store was always located on Rideau Street although moving locations a few times as well as changing names. -Anna finishes her talk by showing a family tree of Moses and Pauline’s family. She goes into details about their 11 children Alex, Sam, Tilly, Jack, Lillian, Nathan, Etta, Rebecca, Lucy, Eva, and David. -Millie begins her talk by providing background for Ottawa in the mid 19th century; the city had a bad reputation and was hard to get to but they did offer much cheaper peddlers' license than Montreal. -Millie discusses the Bilsky houses on Nicholas Street and Daly Street. The Nicholas house was very large because Moses and Pauline would often host new jewish families who had just moved to Ottawa. -Moses was very passionate about protecting and supporting the jewish community and she tells a story from Reverend Mirsky about Moses sitting on Parliament Hill all day to get a jewish man out of jail. -The Bilsky house was also known for Moses religious services, often performed in their home. Millie talks about Moses' struggles with the separating congregations in Ottawa. Moses was one of the founders of Adath Jeshurun and served as the president from 1900 to 1902. -Millie recounts a story about Moses bringing the city of Ottawa’s first Torah from New York to the city. -Moses was very passionate about jewish tradition and went as far as going to Montreal to learn how to butcher kosher chickens so he could provide them to the community. -Moses also organized the first burial society in Ottawa as well as organizing the Zionist society in Ottawa. -Pauline was also very involved in the jewish community; she was the president of the ladies society of Adath Jeshurun and the honorary president of The Ottawa Ladies Hebrew Benevolent Society. -Millie finishes her talk by telling stories and tributes to Moses that speak to his honesty, loyalty, and generosity. -Moses Bilsky died in 1923 and his impact on the city was seen through his funeral in which thousands attended, including the Mayor of Ottawa. -There is a question period in which a story of a family connection to Bilsky is told. END OF SIDE A -Lionel Metrick concludes the night by thanking the two speakers. -He tells a story about a childhood encounter he had with Sam Bilsky in the Bilsky jewelry store and a story of his childhood in the choir with their maternal grandmother. - Dawn Logan watched this video in March, 2006 and was quite impressed by the Marcovitch Farm story as related by Dorothy Karp. She gave an excellent progression of life on the farm and the final expropriation for the Ottawa Airport. There is a short entry on the Marcovitch Farm in the book entitled Bowesville: a place to remember. I am going to write Dorothy Karp for information, e.g. a photograph perhaps. I spoke to Shirley Berman about the evening presentation and apparently Peaches and Cream corn was served at the end of the meeting.

- The recording starts with Phylis Racow's introduction of Betsy Rigal who was a second cousin of Sylva Gelber. Ms. Regal was a pioneer feminist who worked for in the civil service for many years. She was born in Toronto to Louis Gelber and Sarah Morris (Montreal) and attended Havergal Ladies College. Later she studied at Columbia University in New York but had to cut her studies there due to the depression. She also attended Camp Canaan, a Zionist camp in Maine as a young woman. While at Havergal, she learned about the new testament so that she could better understand other religions. She is described as a feisty, flamboyant character who had a deep curiosity about life. She performed Negro spirituals and the blues on the radio. Journalism and theatre were two of her passions. In 1931, she produced a very successful play at Hart House. She moved to Palestine for 15 years, leaving on the eve of the establishment of the state of Israel. This is where she began her career in social work which she continued in Canada. She lobbied for health insurance, maternity leave, welfare programs etc., and eventually became Director of the Women's Bureau in the Dept. of Labour. She was given 5 honourary degrees and sat on the Board of Governors of Trent University. She attributed her social conscience to her Jewish background. Shirley Berman thanked the guest speaker and spoke of her memory of Sylva Gelber. It took place at Agudath Israel Synagogue.
