- History / Biographical
- Softball, and occasionally baseball, has been a pick-up or organized league sport within the Ottawa Jewish community since the early 1900's. The strength of the sport depended on the suitable age categories for players and the available sponsors. The mid 1930's was an active period. Joe Feller (menswear) was approached to be a sponsor for the Jewish Boys Softball League. From 1936 through to 1940-1941 the Joe Feller team stayed together, changing sponsors from Joe Feller to Barney Weiss (Capital Hotel) to Sammy Greenberg (United Coal). Other active periods include the 1950's with Minute Car Wash, I.G.A. (Independent Grocers Association), Budget Motor Sales and Koffman’s as sponsors; the mid 1970's with sponsors Cohen & Cohen, Nepean Motors, Yankel’s, Jewish Community Centre, B’nai B’rith and M. Levinson Salvage as sponsors; late 1980s with sponsors Minto Construction, Shores, Rivers, Cohen & Cohen, Regional Realty, Bakermet, Golden Palace & Fine's Flowers, Mastercraft, Melting Pot, Ottawa Athletic Club, Pollack Personnel, Ron Engineering and Levinson-Viner.
- Notes
- 1. 1930's information from Ottawa Jewish Bulletin & Review, September 3, 1977. A young man died and I must write: a tribute to Joe Bodnoff by a friend of his youth. 2. Records donated by Howie Osterer. 3. See August 16 2010 Ottawa Jewish Bulletin article about Osterer family. 4. Osterer brothers Irving and Howie have been consistent leaders and organizers of men's softball for the past thirty years.
