History / Biographical
ORT (initials of Russian Obshchestvo Rasprostraneniya Truda Sredi Yevreyev), the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training, was founded in Russia in 1880 to promote vocational training of trades and agriculture among impoverished Jews. Now it is dedicated to filling the skills-training needs of Jewish people throughout the world. Canadian ORT’s primary objective is to promote vocational training, both technical and agricultural, for children and adults in the Canadian ORT schools in Israel. Ottawa Women’s ORT was founded in 1948. The first executive consisted of Mrs. A.M. Goldman, Chairman, Mrs. Myer Dunsiger, Recording Secretary, Mrs. A.R. Millar, Corresponding Secretary, Mrs. Sam Greenberg, Treasurer. The Ottawa region consists of chapters, each geared to satisfy a range of interests and more or less different age groups. Numbers for each chapters were replaced by names, such as Shalom, the most senior chapter, Eilat, Eretz, Kadimah and Chaverot for young participants. Regional board meetings are held monthly, September to June, and chapters meet bi-monthly. National conferences are held biennially. Each year the Ottawa region organizes a closing and awards evening. Ottawa chapters raise funds in a variety of ways. Bingo, children’s fashion show, bazaars, bake sales and rummage sales gave way to teas, Mother’s Day Brunch and publication of calendar year book, book sale, Christmas gift wrapping at a major shopping centre, sale of entertainment books etc.
