History / Biographical
Tatiana Jour is a Russian-speaking archivist born in Riga, trained in Moscow, and living in Montreal for the past eight years. For this project, she collected archival material and scanned items from the private collections of recent Jewish immigrants from Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union. The project has received funding from Jewish Community Foundation of Montreal. Donors to the project include poets and writers, scientists, historians, publishers, musicians, graphic artists, Holocaust survivors. war veterans, and athletes. Most have immigrated here since 1991.

The story behind the painting of the boy, titled "Lullaby," is that the officer asked him to dig his own grave and before he was killed he played on his flute a lullaby his mother had sung him as a baby. The burning ghetto and other Jews are seen behind him. The face of the pregnant woman is based on that of Volshov's mother. The book in her hand is meant to be a prayer book, but the lettering was not added at the time of donation

Born before WWII in Moscow, father from Belorussia (trained as a Doctor, opened a pharmacy.) Vera Parnes worked with pioneering methods of diagnosing cancer through imaging devices. In 1990 she began working on Wallenberg commemorations in Moscow. In Montreal, since 1991, assisted to immigrate by PM Mulroney, she was asked to work in the Montreal General Hospital here but continued her Wallenberg work instead, as President of Montreal's International Wallenberg Movement for Humanity.

Yakov Rabkin was born 1945 in St. Petersburg. First studying chemistry, he left Russia in the early 1970s, via Vienna and briefly Israel. He came to Montreal in 1973 to teach history at University of Montreal, where he is today.
