History / Biographical
Louis Doctor was born in Europe and emigrated with his wife and family from Vilna, Russia in 1900. His children included Mrs. Louis (Mindel) Lieff of Ottawa, Mrs. T. Meson of Boston, Moses and David of Ottawa, Benjamin and Abraham of Toronto, Samuel of New York and Philip and Hyman of Boston. They lived in a building next door to the Agudath Achim synagogue located at 417 Rideau Street. Moses Doctor (1900-1934), was a prominent Ottawa lawyer and passed away on March 21, 1934, suddenly from a heart attack at the age of 33. Rev. Louis Doctor passed away on September 19, 1934, (Yom Kippur 5695), after prolonged illness. Reverend Louis Doctor held the positions of Cantor, Shochet and Cantor Emeritus for the Agudath Achim Congregation, Ottawa between 1902 and 1934. In 1902, Louis conducted the service for the cornerstone laying of Agudath Achim Synagogue. Reverend Doctor was “one of the pillars of Ottawa Jewry. He was a scholar of note... and was considered an authority locally on Jewish books”. In 1933, he founded the Ottawa Hebrew Free Loan Association which helped Jewish immigrants by providing loans at zero or little interest and helped people find jobs within the community.
