- History / Biographical
- Rideau View Golf and Country Club was opened in the summer of 1958 with a nine hole golf course which would later be extended to 18 holes in 1962. The idea for the Club began in October, 1955, when a group of 20 golf enthusiasts met at the home of Jack Snow to discuss the possibility of building a golf course for the Jewish community. At that time, many were active members of the Gatineau Golf Club in Alymer, but were anxious to belong to a private club that they could call their own. In September, 1956, the inaugural general meeting of Rideau View Golf and Country Club took place at the Montefiore Club on Gilmour Street. The meeting was attended by 66 men who made the final decision that a Jewish golf club be established. Alex Betcherman volunteered to make available a tract of land that he owned in Manotick, at his cost. The first nine holes were designed by Howard Watson and the last nine by Robbie Robinson. Jack Snow, was the Club's first president, and was supported by many Ottawa Jewish businessmen. A Ladies Association was established in 1957. In 1992, the Rideau View Golf and Country Club was renamed the Rideau View Country Club. The Club celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2006.
- Notes
- 1. Early records donated by John Holzman, Marjory Feldman and Barbara Sugarman, December, 2005. More mature period records donated by John Holzman, Spring, 2006; Ladies Association material donated by Doris Bronstein, Summer, 2007. 2. John Holzman indicated that the founders were practically all Ottawa businessmen and that all Rideau View trophies to this day are all Jewish donated. 3. Quotation from the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin, September 25, 2000. 4. Photograph of 1967 Rideau View Golf Club for Canada’s Centennial 1967 trophy with Nancy Saslove and Nina Saslove. The trophy will not be used again until 2067. 5. Rideau View continues to honour Jewish holidays by closing the dining room and administrative offices. 6. Further accrual of 6 colourour photographs of the opening reception for the 2006 season and of their 50th anniversary exhibit. Photographs donated by Dawn Logan, May 15, 2006 7. CD located in Multimedia Box 1, power point presentation is rather dated and poor quality (2015.) 8. 2000 onwards of Bulletins donated by Doris Bronstein, January, 2008. 9. Information from Dick Kirkpatrick, January 14, 2013, taken from a golf course review website - "My family and I built the back nine for Robbie in 1961 for the grand sum of $44,000.00, not including irrigation. Dick Woodward was the superintendent at the time and the club was 100% Jewish at the time. The only director I remember is Jules Loeb, whose family founded the grocery store chain of the same name. The president of the club at the time (don’t remember his name) was involved with the Bank of Canada. Good people to work for."
