- History / Biographical
- Bora Laskin was born in Fort William, Ontario (now Thunder Bay) in 1912. His parents, Max and Bluma, were Russian immigrants. He obtained his B.A., Masters of Arts, and a law degree at the University of Toronto, followed by a master’s degree in law at Harvard University. In 1940 he began teaching at the University of Toronto. In 1965 he accepted an appointment to the Ontario Court of Appeals. In 1970 Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau appointed him to the Supreme Court of Canada where he “quickly became known for the brilliance of his written judgments and his humanitarian principles”. He became Chief Justice in 1973, Canada’s 14th Chief Justice and the first Jewish person ever to sit on the court. He married Peggy Tenenbaum in 1938 and they had two children. He died in 1984.
