History / Biographical
Max (Motel) Sivak was born in June 1909. Max Sivak and his family arrived in Montreal in 1923 as Jewish WWI refugees from the Ukraine. Having already joined the Hashomer Hatzair Movement at the age of eleven, at eighteen he became part of a hachshara settlement in Western Canada, and at 22 joined a Kibbutz in mandate Eretz Yisrael. While in Israel, he married Chienka Levine, who he had met as a teenager in Montreal. Chienka, who was an ardent Labour Zionist as well, had come to Canada with her family in the 1920s and made aliyah to Israel a year after Max. They returned to Montreal shortly before WWII with their daughter Miriam, and their family was completed a few years later by the birth of their son Jacob. In 1944, Sivak joined the Zhitlovsky branch of the Farband Labour Zionist Alliance. As LZA chairman he was delegate to several plenary assemblies of Canadian Jewish Congress and was elected several times to the executive of CJC, Quebec Region. After Chienka Sivak died in 1997, Max Sivak moved to Toronto, where he died in 2002 at the age of 93
