OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, June 22, 2006 Fransblow, Max - Peacefully, in St. Catharine's, ON, on Tuesday, June 20, 2006 in his 92nd year. Beloved husband of the late Ida (Guss). Dearly loved father of Jerome of Abbotsford, British Colombia, June Mary Fransblow and Michael Karenberg of Kingston, ON and Marlene and her husband Howard Slepkov of St. Catharine's, ON. Cherished and much admired grandfather of Rebecca and Noah Slepkov. He will be greatly missed by his many nieces, nephews and their families. He is survived by his sister, Kay Cohen (the late Nathan) of Moncton and his sisters-in-law Sylvia Fransblow of Fredericton, Bernice Fransblow of Vancouver, British Colombia and Rose Guss (the late William) of Saint John. He is predeceased by his brothers, Edward (Rose), Louis, Harry, Hyman, William, his twin brother Joseph, his sister Bernetta Guss (Abe) and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ben and Millie Guss, Jack and Jean Guss and Joseph Guss. Max was the proprietor of Fransblow Grocery in Saint John for many years. Funeral service will be held at Brenan's Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John (634-7424) on Thursday, June 22, 2006 at 3:00 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. She was predeceased by her parents. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, November 5, 2002 The death of Mrs. Bertha Rubin (Goldstein) Master, of Saint John, NB, wife of the late Robert Master, occurred peacefully at her residence, on Monday, November 4, 2002. Born in Saint John,, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Rose (Rubin) Goldstein. Bertha was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She had formerly been employed at Princess Dress Shop on Union Street, Jacobson’s Furniture Store and had retired from Dalmy’s Ladies Clothing Store on Charlotte Street following many years of employment. She was a volunteer at the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, and was a member of the Toastmaster’s Women’s Group and the Hadassah Wizo. Bertha was very active at the Senior Citizen’s Centre at the Saint John City Market and had a large circle of friends, which encompassed many age groups. She is survived by three nieces, Janet Stern (Alan) of Halifax, Roslyn Avery of Toronto, and Susan Shaver of Stouffville, ON, one nephew, Michael Goldstein (Allison) of Mississauga, ON, a friend, Darlene Woodford, as well as numerous other cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert, her parents, and two brothers, Ben and Murice Goldstein. The funeral servie will be held on Tuesday, November 5, 2002 at 2:00 p.m. from Brenan’s Select Community Funeral Home Chapel, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, NB (506) 634-7424. Interment will take place at Shaarei Zedek Cemetery, (Fernhill Cemetery). OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, May 16, 2002 The death of Mr. Philip Hamburg of MacLean's Speical Care Home, 268 Golden Grove Road, Saint John, husband of the late Belle (Dreskin) Hamburg. occurred on Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at the Saint John Regional Hospital. Mr. Hamburg owned and operated Dreskin's Ladies' Wear, for many years, before his retirement and was an active member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek. He is survived by three sons, David Hamburg (Pesha Gordon) of Jerusalem, Israel, Norman Hamburg (Linda) of Saint John and Harvey Hamburg (Paul Sabin) of Toronto, ON, seven grandchildren, Chaya, Raya, Avi, Orli, Shirli Hamburg all of Israel and Andrew and Jason Hamburg of Saint John. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to Philip's devoted caregivers Wayne and Bonnie MacLean and Staff. OBITUARIES: Telegraph Journal, April 15, 2000 Samuel (Sam) Cohen 82, Saint John, passed away on Friday, April 14, 2000, following a long illness and period of failing health. Born in Halifax, he was a life-long resident of Saint John. He was the son of the late Jack and Alice Cohen and was predeceased by his wife Bessy and his brother Joe. He is survived by his brother Hy of Boston, Mass., his son and daughter-in-law Mal and Marlies of Dartmouth, N.S., daughter and son-in-law Miriam and George Watkins of Hampton, N.B. and grandchildren Reuven of Halifax/New York, Tova of Dartmouth and Yael of Toronto. Sam was a member of the Congregation Shaarei Zedek and active in various community activities including the Shomer Club and volunteer at the Jewish Museum. Among his various work positions, he is best remembered for his position as Manager of Dalmy’s. A life-long musician, Sam’s melodic saxophone and clarinet stylings lit up the community and dance floors for more than two generations. The funeral will be held at A.W. Cavanagh Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, 634-1712, on Sunday, April 16, at 2 p.m. The family of Mr. Cohen will be receiving visitors during the day of Monday, April 17, and services will be said during the morning and evening. In lieu of flowers, donation to the Saint John Jewish Museum, St. Joseph’s Hospital or the New Brunswick Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated. Interment in Green-Hart Cemetery. Husband of Jen (Kashetsky) Michelson. Born in Saint John he was the son of the late Abram and Gussie (Benjamin) Michelson. Lou had been in the film distribution industry for 25 years and was subsequently involved with the food service and food distribution business. He was a co-owner of the first drive-in restaurant in Saint John, The Dogs-N-Suds, and was an owner of a restaurant supply business. He was very active in the Saint John Jewish Community and held the following positions with the Congregation Shaarei Zedek, treasurer, vice-president, and president for three years, and at the time of his death was the chairman of the Jewish Religious Committee. For the past 13 years in the absence of a Rabbi he served devoutly as Lay Reader. In 1986 Lou Michelson received an honorary life membership in the Congregation Shaarei Zedek and in 1994 he received the community service award from the Atlantic Jewish Council. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Besides his wife he is survived by one son, Dr. Alan Michelson, and his wife Dr. Donna M. of Waban, Mass, one sister, Ida Shuman and her husband Morris of Dundas Ont., two grandchildren, Aviel and Ariane, both at home, several nieces and nephews. Resting at the 'Hillsley' Funeral Home, 91 Leinster Street, 634-1700, from where the funeral will be held from the 'Hillsley' Chapel on Monday with service at 2 p.m. Interment in Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. Donations to the Canadian Kidney Foundation or the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum would be appreciated by the family. Born in Russia, she is the daughter of the late Itzak and Fannie (Sofin) Gruber. Mrs. Gruber was a member of the Shaarei Zedek Synagogue. She is survived by two daughters, Ruth Goldberg of Saint John, and Betty Silver of Mississauga, Ontario; five grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, August 1, 1989 Fena Calp, wife of Abraham Calp, of York Point in Saint John, died this morning at the Turnbull Home after a lingering illness. Mrs. Calp was widely known in the city and, when her health permitted, was active in cultural and community affairs. Born in Odessa, USSR, she was married there and came to Saint John with her husband in 1926. While she and her husband raised their family here, his business Calp’s Ltd. grew to one of Eastern Canada’s major success stories in clothing and modern merchandising. Mrs. Calp was a lifelong member of Shaarei Zedek Congregation and took an active role in the work of the Hadassah and other community organizations. Besides her husband, she is survived by three daughters: Marie Bornstein, Toronto, Lucille Kerr, Halifax, and Francine Goldsmith, Saint John; as well as three great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces. The funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. from the Castle Funeral Home (Hillsley) with interment in the Hebrew Cemetery at Fernhill. The family has requested no viewing at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Henrietta Szold chapter of Hadassah or to the Canadian Arthritis Society.
