- History / Biographical
- Adolph Saslove (d. 1942) and his wife Sarah Torontow (b. 1894 - d. 1964) were both born in Russia. Sarah arrived in Montreal in 1906 and attended high school on a scholarship. Adolph Saslove, after serving in the Czar’s army as a scribe, emigrated to Ottawa in 1913 and married Sarah in 1919. After operating a tire store on Rideau Street, he moved his family to Detroit which was then the motor city. He operated the Lovernois Tire Exchange with six stores around the city. He died there in 1942 and his wife returned to Ottawa where all her brothers and sister Ann resided. Adolph and Sarah’s son, Edward, died January 7, 1944 in World War II. They had two other children, Ralph and Martin. Martin Saslove owned and operated Beechwood Steel Supply, located first on Beechwood and then on Sheffield Road until 1995. Ralph was an athlete and operated a tire business, Ralph’s Auto Supply. Adolph Saslove arranged for his immediate family, brother, Saul Saslove, sister Dora Saslove, mother Anna Saslove, and cousin Rae Gosewich, to emigrate to Ottawa in 1921. In the winter of 1922 Adolph Saslove returned to Russia to bring other Jewish people to Ottawa. Saul Saslove was 16 when he arrived. Somewhere around 1928-1930 he worked in Detroit and learned the tire business. In the 1930's he returned to Ottawa and worked as a Parts Manager for Baker Brothers. In 1939, Saul Saslove and William Stone founded S&S Auto Parts, an Automotive Wrecking Business at 814 Wellington Street. The business expanded. It grew from three employees to twenty-five and in 1950 became a limited company headed by Saul Saslove. The twenty-fifth anniversary of S & S Auto Parts Limited was celebrated in 1964. Saul Saslove was a tireless worker for Machzikei Adath Congregation. He served as President for many years and during his term he interviewed Rabbi Bulka in New York for his position with the Congregation. In 1978, the congregation gave Saul and Lillian Saslove a gala dinner. “It was an exciting evening of deserving tribute to a couple who have endeared themselves to the shul and the entire community”. Saul married Lillian Ferguson and had two children, Edagr and Herbert. Ralph Saslove married Sylvia Weiner and had two children, Howard (b. May 23, 1952) and Andrea (b. September 17, 1956).
