- History / Biographical
- Shaffer’s Ltd. was a clothing store founded by Abraham Shaffer which first opened on Dalhousie Street in 1911. Abraham’s wife, Mary (nee Baslow), noticed that Rideau Street had considerably more business than Dalhousie and encouraged Abraham to move the business. Shaffers gradually expanded to include 143 to 1471/2 Rideau Street and the family lived above the store for some time. In 1961, Shaffer’s celebrated a Golden Jubilee. It was always a family business with both Mary and Abraham Shaffer giving direction. In 1967, Abraham and Mary's sons Sheldon and Milton Shaffer sold to the Caplan family, long time family friends and neighbours on Rideau Street for more than fifty years.
