History / Biographical
In 1973, the National Council of Jewish Women - Ottawa Section (NCJW), in conjunction with the Ottawa Jewish Community Council first aired the television program “Shalom Ottawa” on Skyline Cablevision. The focus established in the first year was Jewish holidays, institutions, personalities and special events. These themes were carried on throughout the years with only minor changes in format. Early in the development of the program, the news portion was replaced with current events and a panel segment called “Viewpoint”. The budget was $1000.00 per year, with $20.00 going to pay for a professional director. In the early years of television, money was saved by wiping tapes that were not of high quality so that the video cassettes could be reused for other shows. As a result, early examples of Shalom Ottawa do not exist. The production committee was very concerned with the quality of the program and developed a tip sheet for guests and new volunteers to use. Various NCJW members took turns producing and hosting programs throughout the years. Initially, Gittel Tatz was Executive Producer while Anita Pollock, Hy Hochberg, Merida Sachs, Ruth Calof, Florence Elman, Dena Gosewich, Hennie Gosewich and Nancy Zelman formed the production committee. The committee met regularly to plan upcoming shows and organize publicity for a relatively new phenomena of local, ethnic programming. By 1975, the production committee was dissatisfied with the limited technical capabilities and television signal that Skyline was able to provide. Shows were broadcast on the first and third Tuesdays of each month and re-broadcast on the following Sundays. In 1977, Marion Silver answered an advertisement for a Shalom Ottawa volunteer which appeared in the Ottawa Jewish Bulletin. She was soon appearing in the “Ask The Rabbi” portion of the program with Rabbi Aranov. Marion spent hours doing background research on the material for the show which was recorded in the evening and did not conflict with raising her family or her teaching career. Marion Silver started producing and co-hosting the show with Donna Goldman in 1989 and eventually left the program to complete a master’s program. During the 1980's, Marion Silver was co-host of the program along with Alex Griller, Philip Gennis, Donna Goldman and Sam Neuman. Ed Fine joined the program for the 1991-1992 season and left in 1995 when Ian Sadinsky and Sam Goldstein joined Marion Silver. Early in the 1980's, Vice-President of the NCJW Ottawa Section, Meredith Sachs revised the program through the National Council of Jewish Women. Marion Silver took part in this process which changed the program into a magazine format with segments recorded out in the field and livelier camera work. Shalom Ottawa programs ran from September or October to May or June. Nicola Hamer was host to a number of guests who spoke about a wide variety of topics of interest to the Ottawa Jewish Community. Benita Siemiatycki started hosting the show in 2008.
