- Simcha Petrushka (b. 8 Oct. 1893; d. 10 April 1953) was born in Prage, near Warsaw, Poland. Petrushka is perhaps best known for his translation of the Mishna from Hebrew to Yiddish, with commentary. Considered a prodigy, Petrushka spent his early years of study at a traditional yeshivas with rabbinic scholars. Later he moved to more secular studies of Judaism, combining the study of several fields. Petrushka became a celebrated writer, biographer, editor and contributor to the world of Jewish intelligentsia yet much of his work was aimed at the general Jewish public. In the 1930s and 1940s, Petrushka produced an encyclopedia of Jewish culture and history in Yiddish: Yudishe entsiklopediye far yudishe geshikhte, kultur, religiye, filolozofiye, literatur, biographiye, bibliographiye un andere yudishe inyonim. Petrushka immigrated to Montreal with his family in 1939, escaping the invasion of Poland by Nazi Germany. Once in Montreal, Petrushka continued to work and publish his Encyclopedia as well as his Mishnah translation.
