- History / Biographical
- The Soloway Jewish Community Centre (SJCC) opened September 13, 1998. It is the modern successor to the Jewish Community Centre of Ottawa which was located in downtown Ottawa at 151 Chapel Street. The new SJCC is located in the west end of Ottawa at 21 Nadolny Sachs Private. It was named for Hy Soloway (1913-2004), a noted Ottawa lawyer and distinguished member of the Ottawa Jewish community. The Mission Statement of the SJCC states that it is a “gathering place for Jewish people and organizations. We provide a full spectrum of life enriching programs and services for Jews and non-Jews, members and non-members. As the hub of the community, the SJCC will make things happen. We actively support and facilitate community-wide events and ideals. We collaborate with a range of partners to address the social, cultural, physical and intellectual needs of the community. We are inclusive and transform resources into memorable Jewish experiences for people of all ages.” The SJCC is actually made up of a group of five organizations which include the centre itself; the Jewish Community of Ottawa Summer Camp, the Hapoel Cultural & Recreational Centre of Ottawa, the Vered Israel Cultural Centre and the Early Beginnings Multicultural Day Care Centre. The SJCC is a registered charity and is governed by a Board of Directors consisting of 23 dedicated volunteers. The Board oversees the operation of the centre and develops Policies and Strategic Direction.
