- Temple Israel Congregation was established in 1966 and was the first reform congregation in Ottawa. The founders of the congregation were Bill Danson and Billy Danson, Myrna and Ernie Potechin, Irwin and Elaine Singer, Sam and Jean Bond and Madelyn Alexandor, all relatively new to Ottawa and determined to have a liberal reform congregation in Ottawa. They met in the spring of 1966 and by November of that year, the group had a paid-up membership of seventeen families. Bill Danso was the Pro-Term Executive and David Alexandor was elected as the congregation's first President at the first official meeting on March 12, 1967. In March, 1967 the name Temple Israel was chosen and the first consecration service was held on October 28, 1967. In this same year, the Temple Israel School, Choir, and Sisterhood were also established. Elaine Singer was the first president of the Temple Israel Sisterhood. For a period of about five years, Temple Israel was the congregation without a "home." Services were first held at the Histadrut Centre, then at the Montefiore Club with occasional large services at the Chateau Laurier or El Mirador Hotel. In September, 1971, the congregation had its first permanent home in the former B’nai Jacob Synagogue, 54 James Street. After the building's purchase, a building committee was formed, chaired by Jacqueline Holzman and included, David Alexandor, Alfred Friedman, Zeev Vered, Dr. Charles Shapiro, Barbara Sabcov, and Joe Ginsberg (president). The building was renovated and used until October, 1972 when it was badly damaged by fire. After that, arrangements were made for services in the Montefiore Club, the Jewish Community Centre, 151 Chapel Street and the Unitarian Congregation. In 1975, Temple Israel held their High Holiday services in a newly designed synagogue building on Prince of Wales Drive. Rabbi David Powell served the congregation from the summer of 1967 until June 1972, and was followed by Rabbi Donald Gerber in 1975 who was present for the dedication of the new synagogue. Rabbi Sandford T. Marcus served from 1980 - 1986, Rabbi Donald Tam 1987, Irwin Tannenbaum from 1987 to 1995. Rabbi Steven Garten was appointed in 1995. Presidents of Temple Israel include, David Alexandor, Max Strenthal, Joseph Ginsberg, and Irving Singer.
