- William Moses Cohen came to Canada from Europe, possibly Lithuania, as a young man (or as a child with his and may have settled in Montreal with a brother Simon who operated a wholesale clothing business. William married Hattie, around 1890, and they settled in Lanark, Ontario. William established a dry goods store in Lanark and was active in that area for forty years. William and Hattie had four children, Herman, Eleanor, Philip and Rose. Herman and Philip were in Ottawa by 1930. Herman Cohen worked for Ottawa’s first Jewish druggist, Louis Cohen.

These materials were sold along with other contents of the garage in mid-1993 to a picker named Mr. Belanger who broke up the collection and sold the photos of Mr. Cohen's store to "Larry" a former OPP officer who collects and deals in Ottawa Valley ephemera. The present collection was bought from Mr. Belanger by Bennet McCardle at the Bently Aveue Flea Market Ottawa on September 12, 1993.
