History / Biographical
The Young People’s League began with the name Young People’s League of the Synagogues of Ottawa and then changed to Young People’s League of the Jewish Community of Ottawa. It was one of several groups dedicated to the Jewish youth of Ottawa. Young People's League (Y.P.L.) met twice monthly, on Sunday evenings in the Talmud Torah hall for dances, theatre, music, debates, speeches, etc. The Young People's League began in 1929 with Dr. Samuel Mirsky as the founding president. Other presidents included Dr. Charles Spiro, David Wolochow, Harold Shenkman, Harry Sigler, Bertram Loeb, Michael Greenberg, John Mirsky, Hy Soloway, Maurice Wright, Philip Stuchen, Ethel Petegorsky, Donald Snipper. It was directed to the “over 21's” and programming was both social and cultural. The Ottawa Jewish Bulletin of January 1941 reported that Y.P.L's Music Appreciation Group regularly drew an average of 50 people to its meetings held in the Vestry Rooms of the Adath Jeshurun Synagogue. World War II interrupted a very active organization. It reorganized after 1945 and continued into the early 1950s.
