History / Biographical
Norman Zagerman (b. 1929) was born in Ottawa to parents Morris and Mildred Zagerman. Norman worked in the family business, Zagerman & Co. which operated from 1923 to 1994 and then joined BMO Nesbitt Burns in 1994. Norman has been a strong supporter of the Ottawa Jewish Community. He was a charter member of the Ottawa Jewish Community Foundation in 1971 and served as President of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa between June 1973 and June 1975. Norman had one brother, Joel Zagerman (b. 1928 d. August 17, 1944). He was a bright, young man who died at age 16 of unknown causes. Joel attended York Street Public School and was a student of Lisgar Collegiate when his bright future was cut short. Joel enjoyed debating and debated with Irving Aaron and Martin Schneiderman through the AZA. A bronze plaque commemorates the donation of a room at the Chapel Street JCC in Joel's honour. The plaque is inscribed: "This room donated in memory of Joel Wolf Zagerman by his parents Mr. & Mrs. Morris Zagerman 1952". The plaque was moved to the Soloway JCC in 1998 and is located in the Greenberg Families Library.
