He received his Fellowship in Internal Medicine from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1955 and was admitted to the American College of Physicians and American Society of Internal Medicine in 2002. Artifacts: photographs of the medals (see no. 4): Canadian Amateur Swimming Association, Manitoba Section,1942, 1944, St. John Swimming Club, 1938; plaque from Ottawa Civic Hospital. 4. On October 24, 2007, Dr Cosman was loaned the three swimming medals which he won in 1938, 1942 and 1944. The agreement, signed by Dr. Cosman, agrees to return the medals “after he no longer wished to have possession of them”. His parents arrived with their families in Winnipeg in 1912. His parents married in 1917 and they were very good friends of a Mr. & Mrs. George Harrison, administrators of the Public Baths, Sherbrooke Street, Winnipeg. 5. All of Dr. Cosman’s family enjoyed the Pubic Baths and Dr. Cosman started swimming at the age of 3 (1929). At the age of 5 he was the first person to swim the entire length of the newly opened swimming pool, 1934. 6. In the fall of 2007, Dr. Cosman requested the 1938, 1942 and 1944 swimming medals be returned to him because a friend, Mark Halpern, of his late brother in Winnipeg, had located a 1943 medal in a bag of medals. Mark Halpern called a niece of Dr. Cosman and inquired if anyone in her family was a swimmer. 7. The Ottawa Jewish Archives agreed to have the medals cleaned by our silver restorer, Chris Toogood, and Dr. Cosman had them framed. He signed a long term loan agreement with the understanding that the medals would eventually be returned to the Ottawa Jewish Archives. The 1938 and the 1942 medals were won in the Sherbrooke Swimming Pool. The 1943 and 1944 swims were at Winnipeg Beach, Lake Winnipeg in the summer. The 1943 was a half-mile, and the 1944 was 1 mile. The Lake Winnipeg meets were called the Wriggley Swims from the chewing gum sponsor.

- History / Biographical
- Hans Reiche (b. November 28, 1914 – d. September 30, 2000) was born in in Berlin, Germany, to parents Fritz Reiche and Berta Ochs. Fritz Reiche was a professor of Physics and was an associate of Albert Einstein, Max Planck, O. Lummer, Niels Bohr, Lise Meitner, Rudi Ladenburg and Otto Hahn. Hans' maternal grandfather was the founder and conductor of The Berlin Philharmonic Choir. His maternal grandmother was born Friedlander, whose family was famous for their Royal Jewelry shop next to the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. In 1923 the Reiche family moved to Breslau, but moved back to Berlin when Hans' father lost his professorship due to the Nuremberg Laws. Hans graduated from the Technical University of Berlin in 1936 in the field of Electrical Engineering and obtained his masters in 1938. From 1938 to 1939 he was briefly employed with Radio Laboratory Stock. Hans immigrated to England on July 6, 1939 thanks to an affidavit obtained from Sir Stefford Chirps, a Minister in the British Government. Hans was allowed to take with him 18 shillings; no other money, nor valuables or jewelry. Hans worked as a Wireless Engineer for Flexman’s Radio in Chelmsford, Essex, until he was detained by the British government on May 12, 1940, because he was an immigrant of German origins (despite the fact that he fled Germany due to persecution). In July of 1940, Hans was transported to Canada and was first interned as a “friendly alien” in camps at Monteith, Ontario, then in Sherbrooke, Quebec. With the intercession of Dr. Albert Einstein to the Canadian Government, Hans was eventually released in June 1942. Then by a special order-in-council he was given a classified position at the Department of Munitions and Supplies. He continued to work for the Canadian Government at senior levels with the Department of National Defense from 1943 until his retirement in 1981. After retirement Hans became a consultant in Reliability and Maintainability Engineering and authored two books on the subject. As the Canadian representative on the International Electro-technical Commission, he authored many engineering papers and presented them in the United States, France, Israel, England and the Netherlands. He was first married in 1942 to Etta Goldschlaiger. Following his first wife’s premature death from cancer, he married Sylvia Schachet in 1949. Hans Reiche was also a leading philatelist (stamp collector) and an outstanding philatelic writer. His parents, Dr. Fritz Reiche and Bertha Reiche, and sister Eva Reiche, were able to leave Berlin in 1941 for New York via the unoccupied south of France, Spain and Portugal, and boarded one of the last ships leaving for the US. Dr. Fritz Reiche brought highly classified information on the development of the German atomic bomb and these facts are documented in Thomas Power’s, "Heisenberg’s War: The secret history of the German bomb."
