History / Biographical
Oscar-winning director Beverly Shaffer (I'll Find a Way: Best Live Action Short, 1978) was born in Montreal, earning degrees from McGill and Macdonald College. She began working for the National Film Board under the Studio D project in 1975, directing for the next ten years all of the "Children in Canada" series films, which included "I'll Find a Way". Other notable films by Ms. Shaffer include "Mr. Mergler's Gift" (2005) and the 1999 follow-up to "I'll Find a Way", "It's Just a Wedding".

Handel Productions is a Montreal-based company that produces factual-based television programming and feature-length documentary films. Founded by Executive Producer Alan Handel, who frequently has acted as a director, writer and producer, the company bases its work in Canada but has produced numerous productions internationally and in partnership with companies and organizations such as the CBC, Radio Canada, BBC, Discovery Channel (US, Canada and International), the History Channel (US), PBS, Bravo, NBC, ARTE France, Channel Five (UK), ZDF, Global TV, CTV, and the National Geographic Channel (US). In 2004, Alan Handel Productions was nominated for a Gemini for their documentary, "Singing in the Shadows: The Children of Rock Royalty". In 2006, the company was nominated for two primetime Emmys as well as Gemini for their work on "How William Shatner Changed the World". Documentary". For the "Fifth Estate", Handel produced episodes entitled, "Show 14 - Steel City Star", "Show 6 - Plane Language", and "Show 20 - The Las Report".
