Sephardic Oral History Project interview by Marie Berdugo Cohen. Digitized in WAV format in February 2016. Biography: Rafoul avec sa femme et ses deux fils sont arrivés en provenance d'Israël où ils ont vécu pendant 20 ans. En Septembre 1965 ils débarquèrent à Montréal, où Ezra avait un frère et une soeur qu'il voulait revoir. Il avait auparavant quitté la Syrie à l'âge de 16 ans, pour habiter en Israël. Ezra se rappelle une douloureuse période où son père et sa mère voulant s'enfuir clandestinement de Syrie, ont été rattrapés, emprisonnés: la mère, trois mois, et le père paralytique, un mois, attaché avec une chaîne aux pieds du lit d'hôpital. Il se rappelle aussi ce qu'il nomme: Crystal Night, à Alep, en Octobre 1947, où les Syriens ont brûlé toutes les synagogues, et toutes les maisons des Juifs. A Montréal, il a trouvé une discrimination très dure contre les immigrants. Très difficile de se faire des amis, pas de protection de l'employé, un cloisonnement social, une vie basée sur le matériel. Il ne peut pas s'adapter et retourne bientôt en Israël, laissant à Montréal, sa femme et ses fils qui ne veulent pas le suivre.
