History / Biographical
Born to Romanian immigrant parents in 1908, Tressa (nee Schwartz) Jacobson grew up to be an active member of the Montreal Jewish community. She was a founding member of the Ein Kerem chapter of Montreal Hadassah, a lifetime member of Canadian-Hadassah WIZO and a member of the National Council of Jewish women. She also served on the Jewish Music Council of Montreal. In 1933, Ms. Jacobson was elected Queen Esther and her prize was a trip to Palestine. While there she wrote several letters detailing the gaiety of her trip abroad to Tel Aviv, Haifa, Jaffa and Petah Tikvah. Upon her return, Tressa further document her trip by writing an article of it in the Canadian Jewish Chronicle.

Scope and Content
Predominance of letters after Brainin settled in North America. The correspondence includes letters from the famous and the obscure in all parts of the Jewish diaspora, plus Palestine. A majority are written in Hebrew and thus document the renascence of Hebrew as a modern language. Many of the letters were accompanied by manuscripts submitted to Brainin as editor of various Hebrew publications (manuscripts located in Gr. I). Of great interest in this group is the collection of letters from Chava Shapiro to Brainin during their long relationship (Box t). Correspondence is arranged alphabetically in the Hebrew alphabet (Boxes a-t) and then in the Roman alphabet for all other languages (Boxes s-x). The last box in the Group (Box y) contains Brainin family correspondence.

History / Biographical
Hachshara Farms Inc., was incorporated in charter papers in 1945 and headquartered in Montreal on Esplanade Avenue. The organization was founded to provide a training farm for young Jews hoping to be pioneers in Palestine and later Israel. The organization was sponsored significantly by the Labour Zionist movement. The farm was located in Smithville, Ontario - Gore Township. In a 1949 "Montreal Gazette" article, the farm was described as having, "6000 hens, 35 Holstein cattle and several pair of horses as well as ducks, rabbits and bees." The farm also had an orchard and significant and modern farming equipment on which students, both men and women, learnt agricultural science. Students attended the training farm free of charge and lived in a collective-style organization. Courses in cooking, horticulture and landscaping were also available. Modern Hebrew was also taught, mainly during the winter months. In 1947, Hachshara farms opened a second training farm of 695 acres at Ste. Julie-de-Vercheres, approxmately 15 miles from Montreal.
