- History / Biographical
- Jussi Brainin was born in Vienna, Austria on August 11, 1919, the only child of Sigmund and Margaret (nee Beck) Brainin. Jussi's father was originally from Liady, Russia (now in Belarus). Jussi was educated in secular schools at entered university first in 1937 at the Technical College for Textiles and then from 1937-1938 at the Huddersfield Technical Academy in Textile Technology and Chemistry in the UK. His studies ended with the outbreak of the war. Brainin was interned as an enemy alien on the Isle of Man shortly after his marriage to Liesl Kelsen. However from 1940-1946 he served in the British Army, first in the Pioneer Corps, next the Royal Engineers and then with the Intelligence Corps. In 1947, Brainin emigrated to Montreal with his family and continued to work in the insurance field. He continued his involvement with writing and journalism however and in 1956 travelled to Hungary as a freelance journalist. Brainin also had an interest in politics and social organizations, standing for a time as the honorary consul for Austria and also running as the NDP candidate in 1968, losing out to Pierre Elliot Trudeau in the election. Brainin passed away on the 22nd of August, 2008 at the age of 89.
