Creator: Charles and Ninel Segal

History / Biographical: Charles Segal was born in Montreal on November 27, 1921 to Hyman Manuel Segal and Fanny (Moscovitch). Mr. Segal's fonds includes numerous details of his decades of work in the political world - from his days of journalism here in Canada and in the U.S., to his role in Histadrut, his meetings with President Truman and work with Oscar Ewing, his work with fair employment practices with the Construction Fund of the State University of New York and so on. Segal married his wife Ninel (Bercovitch) in 1979 and she also has been heavily involved in work in Congressman Mike McNulty. More details are available within the fonds.

Custodial History: Transferred directly from Charles Segal to the JPL-A starting in 2006. Further accurals expected.

Notes: Fonds also includes photographs, currently awaiting arrangement and description into the JPL Photograph Database.

History / Biographical: George L. Gilbert was born in Montreal on September 3, 1914 to Beckie (nee Wisnitzer) and Luis Gilbert, both immigrants to Canada; his father from Poland and his mother from Austria originally. His service records list his occupation as "department manager". In July 1942, Gilbert enlisted in the Canadian air force and was made pilot at the No. 1 Air Observers School at Malton in December 1943. He served overseas with the City of Vancouver No. 405 (R.C.A.F. Pathfinder). He was reported missing after air operations over Wilhemshaven and was presumed dead on October 15, 1944.

History / Biographical: Harold and Eva Levy, long-time residents of Cote St-Luc, were active community members. Mr. Levy began his career as a tailor. He later went on to manufacturing children's outwear. Items in the collection reflect the history of manufacturing in Montreal, such as the W&W pedal sewing machine. Other notable items include the 'pearly outfits' (which were costumes made for a charity event), with buttons hand sewn into elaborate designs by the Levys and their friends. The Levys were also part of the original founders of the Beth Zion congregation in Cote St-Luc. The first cheder for the congregation was held in the Levy home. Mr. Levy was also a member of the Pipe Smokers' Club of Montreal. Mr. Levy served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War II.

Creator: Mannie Lecker

History / Biographical: Mr. Lecker was born and raised in Montreal. He enlisted in the Canadian Armed Forces during World War II and served as ground maintenance crew in the Air Force. Mr. Lecker was present during D-Day invasion, June 06, 1944 and marched across Europe, specifically through France, Holland and Germany. During his time in Europe, Mr. Lecker collected and saved wartime propaganda and memorabilia. Upon discharge from the Forces Mr. Lecker returned to Montreal but travelled often across Canada as a travelling salesman. Mr. Lecker passed away in Montreal in December 2007.

Custodial History: Initial donation was made in 1978 by Mr. Lecker to Paul Trepman, then director of the JPL. In 2005, Mr. Lecker was reconnected to the Library and Archives and made two further donations in 2005 and 2006. The last donation of Mr. Lecker's service medals was made in 2008 after his death.

History / Biographical: The Millmans opened a table tennis shop on Fairmount near Park Avenue in 1938 and later converted it into a general store with a pinball machine, candies, etc. They resided at the back of the store. It remained open until 1948 when Mr. Millman purchased a taxi. He remained a taxi man for 40 years. The kids who used to gather at the shop grew up and joined the Armed Forces. They wrote letters and in turn received news of the neighborhood from the Millmans.
