- Captain William Winkler of Toronto, Ontario, was killed in a traffic accident in Toronto while on active service. Leaving his medical practice, Captain Winkler enlisted in the army in August 1942. He was born in Austria and came to Canada at the age of 13. There is a Star of David on his tombstone. (See Veterans Affairs Canada website.)
