- Sir Moses Montefiore thanks Lieutenant-Colonel Cowan and Mr. Clarence Smith for their invitation to accompany them to the Guild Hall on the occasion of their inauguration as Sheriffs of London and Middlesex and to breakfast with them at the Albion, Aldersgate Street. Declination of invitation due to the state of Sir Montefiore's health. He wishes Cowan and Smith a happy year in office and as pleasant as his run in office with Sir George Carrol in 1837. Postscript requests the addition of 99 pounds to the "Sheriff's Fund" on Sir Montefiore's behalf. Sender's address: East Cliff Lodge, Ramsgate, England. Recipient's address: 15 Lancaster Gate West, London, England.
