Maurice and his parents immediately fled to France. In July of 1942, the family had to flee again. They crossed the Spanish border illegally, but were arrested by the Spanish police. Instead of sending them back to France, the officers helped Maurice’s family find a place to live. Eventually, Maurice and his parents moved to Portugal where they stayed until April 1944 when they embarked on the Serpa Pinto ship to Philadelphia. Upon arrival, they took a train to Montreal.
