- Notes
- I page, double-sided. Folded once horizontally. Document is a letter to the OFT (acronym unknown, possibly the national land registry office) from Gusztáv Weinberger. He is asking for another house and land to replace the one that was owned by his parents, who were deported, and whose property the Communist land distribution committee gave to someone else. Narrative: Donor is Elaine Kalman Naves, daughter of Gusztáv and Anikó Weinberger. Gusztáv returned from the front to learn that 34 members of his extended family, including his wife and small daughter Évike, had been deported to Auschwitz. Only one cousin returned. He remarried Anikó Schwartz and they had two daughters, Elaine and Judith. Despite his efforts, Gusztáv did not receive any compensation for the loss of his family's property during the war. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. Montreal: McGill-Queen's University Press, 1996. Print.
