History Biographical
Max Bookman was born in Ottawa, 1912, son of Malca and Ben Bookman. He was educated in Ottawa and attended the School of Journalism, Carleton University. He married Celia Sherman in 1941. They had one daughter, Rebecca Anne.
He founded the Ottawa Hebrew News in 1928 at the age of 18. From 1933 onwards he was a news correspondent and was the chief editor for the Canadian Jewish Reference Book, 1963 and the Who’s who in Canadian Jewry, 1964. He also published the Max Bookman News Service, a news gathering and distributing agency. He was a lifelong Zionist , first as a member of Young Judea and its president from 1946 – 1948. He was also involved with the Ottawa Zionist Society and other organizations. He was active in Canadian theatricals and a co-founder of the Ottawa Jewish Theatre Guild.
During World War II, he served with the Canadian army as a warrant officer and was awarded the British Empire Medal in 1944 for a visual system of determining the combat readiness of troops. He also founded and edited regimental publications which included The Pick and Shovel.
In 1956, he joined the Department of Finance, Federal Government and played an active role in the RA Association. Max Bookman died suddenly in Israel while on holiday in November 1967.
