- History / Biographical
- This collection of recipes was written by Kaila Kantorovitch (1860-1936) in Sokolki, Russia around 1906-1907. Kantorovitch, a professionally trained baker, immigrated to Canada in the 1920s, settling in Montreal with most of her 9 children and their families. Her sons, Sam and Meyer Kantorovitch (Cantor) opened a bakery in Montreal. Sam Cantor's son Maxwell Cantor expanded the business known as Cantor's Bakeries to include over fifty stores. The commerical bakery remains in operation.
- Custodial History
- Kaila Kantorovitch gave the recipe book to her son, Meyer Cantor. When he died in 1946, his sister, Manya Lipshitz received the book. The book and article were donated by Manya Lipshitz in 1987.
