- History / Biographical
- Hy Maser (b. 1913 - d. 1997) was born in Ottawa, the son of Rabbi Max Maser (d. October 21, 1953) and Bessie (Caplin) Maser in 1913. He graduated from High School in 1936 and completed the High School of Commerce course before he commenced work with the War Veterans Allowance Board (WVAB) in 1930 as a clerk.He became a career civil servant for the Canadian government. He became Assistant Secretary of the Board and later promoted to Secretary. He retired in 1972.
Hy was on a leave of absence from government employment between 1942 and 1945 when he enlisted with the Royal Canadian Ordinance Corps (RCOC). He was one of six brothers in active service during World War II. He served mostly with the Canadian milita in Kingston as an instructor. Later he served with the Prince of Wales Own Regiment and was discharged in December of 1945.
He married Ruth Epstein in 1937 and they had two sons, Earl born in 1940 and Goldalyn in 1944.
During the 1930s, Hy Maser was an integral part of Young Judaea Ottawa, Jewish Theatre Guild, Scoutmaster of the 39th Scout Troop during the late 1930s and 1946 to 1949. He was an active member of Agudath Israel Congregation from the 1960s until his death in 1997.
