- Born in 1959 in Louiseville, Quebec, Gemma Gagnon is a social history researcher with a Bachelor's degree in Social work (Université du Québec à Montréal) and a master's degree in History (UQAM), with a thesis topic on the unionization of women in the Montreal garment industry, 1936-1937. Gagnon completed her PhD (Diplôme d'études approfondies 1991, PhD 1996) from the École des hautes études en sciences sociales in Paris, writing on homicidal crime in the family in 19th century rural France.
