B&w photograph with a white border. An outdoor portrait of a woman standing by the railing of the Serpa Pinto, wearing dark coloured pants and a light coloured blouse. The woman in the photograph is Alice Eckstein. Narrative: The Serpa Pinto was a Portuguese transport ship, which sailed under the command of Captain Americo Dos Santos. With a capacity of 600 people, the ship made regular trips from Lisbon, Portugal to Rio de Janeiro, New York City, Philadelphia and Baltimore. It has been said that the ship transported about 7800 refugees, among them hundreds of Jews during Second Wold War. Alice Eckstein was the donor's mother. Due to her husband Sam Shenkier's wealth, which was amassed through the Diamond Exchange in Belgium, the family was spared. He could afford to get them out of Europe and away from the Nazis. The Serpa Pinto took them from Lisbon to Philadelphia, from where they made their way to Montreal.
