OBITUARIES: Evening Times Globe, April 18, 1944, SB97, p.152 Myer Gordon Dies; Burial Thursday, Prominent Jewish Citizen Had Been Ill for Year; 72 Years Myer Gordon, a prominent cattle buyer and wholesale meat merchant in the City Market, active in the Jewish organizations and philanthropies, died at his home, 115 Union Street, at 6 o’clock this morning after illness of more than one year. His funeral will be held from his home on Thursday afternoon with services at 2:30 o’clock. Interment will be at the Hebrew Plot at Fernhill Cemetery. He was born in Russia, son of the late Isaac and Freeda Gordon and had lived in Saint John for the last 40 years, during 30 of which he had carried on business in the City Market. He is widely known in the Maritimes and numbered many friends through a charitable and friendly nature. A member of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation, also he belonged to Habonim Lodge, Saint John and for years was a member of the Jewish Immigrant Aid Society of the Y.M.H.A. For a lengthy period he was treasurer of the Shaarei Zedek Congregation. In these interests he was active until illness prevailed. Mr. Gordon who was 72 years of age is survived by his wife, Esther; three daughters, Mrs. Leon Shechter, Montreal, Mrs. Max Zibman, Philadelphia, at present in Saint John, and Mrs. A. Budovitch, of this city; two sons, David, Saint John and Israel W. of New York; a sister, Mrs. J. Nathansen, Halifax and three sisters in Russia; three brothers, Israel, Jacob, and Eli all of Halifax; a granddaughter Miss Phyllis Sybil Shecter, Montreal; three grandsons, Wilfred, Joseph and Morris Gordon, all on active service; two overseas and one in the Air Force at Camp Borden; also several nieces and nephews. The Evening Times Globe Friday, April, 1944 Many Attend Funeral Of Myer Gordon The largely attended funeral of Myer Gordon was held from his late residence, 115 Union Street, yesterday afternoon at 4 o’clock. The funeral service was conducted by Rev. A. Babb and friends acted as pallbearers. Many floral tributes and telegrams were received showing the esteem to which Mr. Gordon had been held. Among the flowers were pieces from the National Packing Co. Ltd., the Quality Packing Company, and friends of the City Market. Interment was made in the Hebrew plot in Fernhill Cemetery. Friends and relatives from out of town attending the funeral were: his son, Israel Gordon, New York; Mr.and Mrs. Leon Shechter and two daughters, Montreal; Mrs. Max Zibman and Mrs. Max Bershanoff Philadephia; Jack Gordon, Debert, N. S.; Mrs. J. Nathanson; sons, I. M. Gordon, J. Gordon, Mr. and Mrs. Eli Gordon; Mrs. H. I. Aranoff and Mrs. Edward Gordon, all of Halifax. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.403.
