- Conservation
- Mounted with heat-set tissue on board, the board is soiled and worn.
- Notes
- The young boy might be Abe Mosion. The Bakery had "two or three horse drawn wagons that would deliver bread." At the end of the day when the wagons were returning to the store, a number of poor families would gather outside and Max would give away whatever had not been sold. Photograph was taken at the storefront of the Dominion Bakery that was located at 419 St. Patrick Street.

- Stein Bros. - Smart Clothes for Women
Max Stein (b.? - d. 1928?) and Rachel Stein (b.1874 - d. 1948) came to Canada from Russia in 1909. Family tradition has it that their last name was in fact Lederschneider, but was changed to the much more manageable Stein in the face of Canadian bureaucracy - a very common occurrence for immigrant families.
Once settled in the Capital, Max and Rachel had five sons and one daughter. Three of their five sons - Harry, Meyer and Norman - operated Stein Bros, a very successful women's clothing store.
The attached photo shows Meyer Stein standing outside the store's initial location in 1919 before it expanded and moved to its then permanent location at 149-151 Bank Street in 1925. The number for this first store was 259, but what street it was on remains unknown.
Besides being known for their quality clothing, Stein Bros. was also quoted in a 1959 Ottawa Citizen article as being "the first fashion store to bring pleasant recorded music for the enjoyment of women shoppers" in Ottawa.
It is not known when the store was closed, but the last advertisement seen for Stein Bros. was printed in 1968.
