History / Biographical
The first official meeting of Adath Jeshrun was held on December 9, 1891 with the express purpose of establishing an orthodox congregation for the growing Jewish Community of Ottawa. Congregation Adath Jeshrun was founded in 1892 when its first president, John Dover, received the official charter. John Dover, Abraham Kranf, Morris Adler, and Michael Fine served as the first official executive committee. During the 1891 meeting it was agreed that the congregation was to be overseen by a committee of elected officials which would make up the executive committee. Executive offices included a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and three Trustees with office terms of one year. The structure of the governing body of Adath Jeshrun continued in this manner for the duration of the congregation's existence, with minor alterations, as it gained additional members. The 1914 congregation by-laws show an expansion of the governing committee. The committee grew to include a President, Vice-President, Parnass, Treasurer, and 9 trustees. The by-laws also established a number of active committees including the Education, House, Choir, Membership, Seat, and Cemetery committees. In 1929 Chevra Kadisha societies were established and additional rules of decorum were added. The by-laws subsequently recorded the religious officials who were to serve as part of the congregation. Religious officials included Rabbi, Chazan, Assistant Chazan, Shamas, and a Choir Master. Between 1890 and 1895, religious services were conducted at the homes of Moses Bilsky and John Dover, or at the homes of the leading members of the day. In 1893 a plot of land was bought on the East side of King Street for the congregation. The first Adath Jeshurun Synagogue was housed in a small building at 264 Murray Street from 1895-1904. The corner stone for the new synagogue was laid July 25, 1904 by A. Rosenthal. The congregation later moved into the King Edward Street shul, located at 375 King Edward Avenue. The Synagogue Building Committee was chaired by Archibald Freiman, then only 21 years of age. He presided over the Congregation from 1904 until 1930. Wolfe Abelson was the vice president throughout the early part of the congregation's history, serving continuously from 1905 to 1930. In 1910 the Hebrew Institute was added with the establishment of the Talmud Torah Board of Education. In 1917 it was decided that the King Edward Institute, owned by the congregation, was to be leased in order to facilitate the amalgamation of all Talmud Torah's in the area. During the first half of the twentieth century the congregation of Adath Jeshrun served as the principal orthodox congregation of the Ottawa Jewish Community. When the Diamond Jubilee was celebrated in 1952, two of the original congregation members, Jacob Freedman and Bernard Smith, were part of the festivities. Ottawa-born David Petegorsky, Executive Director of the American Jewish Congress, was the guest speaker at the anniversary banquet. In 1956, Adath Jeshurun Congregation, along with Agudath Achim Congregation, joined together to form the Beth Shalom Congregation on Chapel Street. At this time the synagogue building became the Jewish Memorial Chapel, also known as the Chevra Kadisha. The congregations first Cantor and Shochet was Reverend Jacob Mirsky who served from 1892 until 1942, followed by Reverend Joseph Rabin (1929-1956), and Reverend Harry Weissbord (1944-1956). Benjamin Pearl served as Congregation Secretary from 1912 to 1948 and was succeeded by Herman Roodman. Lillian Freiman established the Adath Jeshrun Sisterhood and served as its first president from 1910 until 1929. She was succeeded by Mrs. Slone (1929-1931). Subsequent Presidents were Mrs. S. History / Biographical
The United Hebrew Brethren Congregation, or Agudath Achim, was the second orthodox congregation in Ottawa. Founded in 1902 by former members of Adath Jeshrun, the founding trustees of the synagogue were Abraham Kert (trader and traveller), Moses Roodman (peddler), Myer Held (peddler), Elias Pullan (merchant), Isaac Noe (carpenter), Michael Addleman (peddler), and Moses Merson (upholsterer). It is not known with certainty why former members of Adath Jeshurun split off to form their own congregation; however, some reasons have been speculated. Increased immigration at the time likely played a role in promoting the founding of a new synagogue, as the Jewish population had grown large enough to support two synagogues. Another known issue was that some men were not satisfied with the mechitza, or partition, dividing men and women in the newly built Adath Jeshurun Synagogue. A curtain was the only physical divider separating seating and some men felt it should be a solid wooden panel all around. Regardless of the precise reason, on August 13, 1902, it was announced that the founding trustees had committed the congregation to a $3000 mortgage for the purchase and conversion of a double house at 417 Rideau Street. The congregation’s first structure accommodated 75 male worshipers on the ground floor with a smaller number of seats for women available on the second floor balcony. The day prior, August 12, 1902, a cornerstone was laid by Mr. A. Rosenthal to mark the beginning of the building's conversion. By 1912 a new synagogue was planned to be built at 417 Rideau Street. The building committee consisted of J. Sugarman, H. Finkelstein, and K. Cohen. The corner stone was laid on July 1, 1912 and the new synagogue was opened on January 19, 1913. It was designed by Burgess & Coyle with a seating capacity for 400. The synagogue was later extended in 1928. Rabbi Joseph D. Berger served the Congregation from 1902 to 1927. When the Congregation joined the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa the shared Rabbis were Abraham H. Freedman, William Margolis, Oscar Z. Fasman, Emanuel Lifschutz and Simon L. Eckstein. Religious functionaries included the Reverend Louis Doctor, Cantor Jacob Dorskind, Rabbi Max Maser, Rabbi Aaron Weiss, Reverend Hyman Gertler and Reverend Jacob Y. Cement. In April 1940 the Rideau Street Shul welcomed its new Cantor, Reverend Aaron Weiss, from Breslau, Germany. The governing body of the congregation was a committee of elected officials who, after receiving a majority vote, served in their office for a period of one year. The 1933 Constitution stipulates that the committee was to include a President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and 15 trustees. In 1955-1956, Congregation Agudath Achim amalgamated with Congregation Adath Jeshurun to form Congregation Beth Shalom and their new synagogue on Chapel Street was dedicated in 1957. The closing service of Agudath Achim was held on August 25, 1956. History / Biographical
Rabbi Roy Tannenbaum, formerly of Agudath Israel Congregation, initiated the idea for an egalitarian Conservative synagogue. Early supporters included Morris Schnitzer and Leah Schnitzer, Steve Sugar and Chris Sugar as well as Irwin Brodo and Fenja Brodo. By September, 1979, Adath Shalom was officially affiliated with the United Synagogue Of America (now called the United Synagogues of Conservative Judaism), and it was welcomed as a member of the Jewish Community Council of Ottawa. The first service was held on July 22, 1978, in the Greenbank Public School library and the first president Michael Berns was elected in August 1978. Prayer books were stored in Greenbank School lockers and the Sefer Torah was initially borrowed from Beth Shalom Synagogue. The ark and bimah were stored in the school’s storage area. Other space was rented for High Holidays. Founding principles included more equal participation of women in the service and by February 1982, women were welcomed to participate as part of the minyan. Only after a number of years and many different chazanim and rabbis did congregates take on the responsibility of leasing space for services for the High Holy Days. At the Annual General Meeting in 1990, the congregation approved a move to the Broadview Campus of the Jewish Community Centre and the first service was held at Hillel Academy chapel in 1993.

History / Biographical
In September of 1932, 16 families living in the newly developed west end of Ottawa met in Jacob Taller’s mattress factory for High Holy Day services. The group started meeting for daily and Shabbat services in the homes of Alex Kelman and Shnair Blushinsky. In 1936, the group decided to organize itself into a permanent congregation chartered under the name of Congregation Agudath Israel. With the expansion of the Jewish community into the west end of Ottawa, the congregation was growing rapidly and soon outgrew its small sanctuary. In 1948, a building at 30 Rosemount was purchased. Expansion was swift: the religious school had over 100 children; youth groups, including Brownies and Boy Scouts, were started; the Men’s Club held regular Sunday morning meetings; there was an active Sisterhood. Mixed seating was introduced in the early 1950s. In 1951, the synagogue became affiliated with the United Synagogue of America movement. As the congregation continued to grow, the synagogue purchased eight acres of land between Coldrey Avenue and Laperriere Avenue to construct a new building. By 1966, the complex was completed with the dedication of the new sanctuary. (Copied from the Kehillat Beth Israel Web site in 2018). History / Biographical
During the early 1930s, synagogues in Ottawa were having difficulty retaining the services of rabbis due to financial challenges facing the congregations. As a result, a committee known as the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa was formed with the purpose of hiring a community rabbi to act as the spiritual leader for the entire Jewish community. At the time, the Jewish community was exclusively Orthodox and numbered approximately 2,800 people. Early in 1933, after several months of negotiations, each of the four congregations; Agudath Achim Congregation (Rideau Street), Machzikei Hadas Congregation (Murray Street), B’nai Jacob Congregation (James Street) and Congregation of Adath Jeshurun (King Edward Street), agreed to pay a proportionate amount of the rabbi’s salary of $2500.00 per year. Rabbi Rev. Abraham H. Freedman was the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa’s first appointment and became Ottawa’s first Community Rabbi. Proportionate payment continued to be the standard working formula for the next 20 years for employing five different, “community” or “city” rabbis. With the successful engagement of Rabbi Freedman, the next logical step for the community was the formation of a community council, or Vaad Ha’Ir. Mr. Casper Caplan put forth this motion during a meeting of the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa on August 28, 1933, where he is quoted as having proposed that “the executives of the Associated Synagogues of Ottawa recommend that a Vaad Ha’Ir of twenty-six members be appointed by the Congregations ... and that this body administer the various branches of Jewish activities in the city, principally Kashrut, Jewish education and spiritual guidance, with powers to act for the Congregations in the advancement of Judaism in our city”. The Associated Synagogues were then organized into the Ottawa Vaad Ha’Ir in 1934.

The congregation commenced with nearly 850 families, with about 150 being singles or widows. A new synagogue, designed by Hazelgrove and Lithwick, was inaugurated on Rosh Hashanah, 1956. In 2011 a decision was made to sell the building at 151 Chapel Street in downtown Ottawa as the Congregation could no longer afford its upkeep. In a 142-24 vote on November 6, 2011, shul members approved the sale and the land was to be purchased by the development company Claridge Homes, with the sale to be complete in March of 2012. On the last day before the final signing of the contracts however, Claridge walked away from the deal. Ian Sherman, president of Beth Shalom and broker of the deal said this of the situation, "“I respect their decision not to proceed. They lived by the terms of the agreement. I am not aware that there were any issues, but for business reasons, they chose not to proceed.” Another option for Beth Shalom was to amalgamate with Agudath Israel Synagogue, and after many talks and votes that too was turned down in early 2013. *NEEDS UPDATING*

History / Biographical
Beth Shalom West Congregation started as a satellite synagogue of Beth Shalom Congregation on Chapel Street to fill the need for an Orthodox synagogue in the Greenbank and Baseline area of western Ottawa. On May 3, 1980, the first West End service was led by Rabbi Basel Herring and attended by a small group of Jews in the cafeteria of Sir John A. MacDonald High School. Other functions were held in private homes or nearby public locations. As the group grew in size so did the dream of a permanent facility and on June 1982 the first plans for a building were unveiled. Along with these plans came a price tag of $674,000 and a fund raising campaign. Although the members and community were receptive, it quickly became apparent that west end community could not raise adequate funding for this structure. By November 1983, a Project Management Committee was formed with the goal of devising a building which could house the needs of the congregation and fall within financial boundaries. After considering a number of options and estimates provided by architect Joe Liff, the design of the present structure was created. A central Craig Henry site was chosen for a new synagogue on Chartwell Avenue and the property was donated by developers Jack and Irving Aaron. Over 400 people attended the ceremonial ground breaking ceremony. The dedication and official opening followed in September 1986. On June 3, 2008, the congregation gained independence and officially became Congregation Beit Tikva of Ottawa. The present sanctuary reflects the Orthodox nature of the congregation, including a women’s section defied by a raised floor and wooden Mechitzah. The memory of the Lowertown synagogues is reflected not only in the position of the central Bimah but in the inclusion of the Adath Jeshurun/ Ottawa Chrvra Kadisha’s original Aron Kodesh (Torah Arc) which was installed in February 1999. Rabbi Dr. Basil Herring served as the congregation’s first religious official; Rabbi Michael Orelowitz served from August 1982 to June 1983; Rabbi Sonnenschein joined the congregation in summer of 1983 and became the first full time rabbi in 1989. Rabbi Howard Finkelstein became the congregation’s rabbi August 8th, 1991 to remains in this position to the present day. Chazan Yair Subar is the Musical leader of Beit Tikvah of Ottawa and has been serving the congregation since June 2008.

History / Biographical
Prior to the creation of B'nai Jacob Congregation, the families of Uppertown, (or Centretown as it is now known), were served by the synagogues of Lowertown. The families of Uppertown walked to Lowertown synagogues for Holy Day services. In 1910 an idea arose to establish a congregation of their own, which would address the issue of families having to walk to Lowertown in bad weather. In 1911 the residents of Uppertown began to hold services in a public hall at 219 Bank Street and the home of Mr. J. R. Fogle at 384 Bank Street. J.R. Fogel was a tailor by trade and his business stationary was used to record the shul's history. For these services, the Congregation rented a Torah from another shul for $10 until they were able to raise enough money through donation to purchase their own. In 1914 they raised sufficient funds to purchase a house at 54 James Street which they converted into a shul. The purchase required a $4,000 mortgage and $1,000 in cash. The new Synagogue was named B'nai Jacob at the suggestion of Mr. A. Bookman and Mr. J. R. Fogle and a Talmud Torah was also organized and housed around 40 children. Rev. Morris Lappin was hired for his services as chazan and a mohel and Rev. Samuel Schreiber served as cantor and shoichet for 35 years until the shul closed. In 1931 the building was renovated and on November 19, 1944 the Congregation celebrated the burning of their mortgage. The building underwent a second renovation in 1951. By the late 1960's the congregation's membership had decreased to about 12 or 15 which made it increasingly difficult to form a minyan. In 1971 the decision was made to amalgamate into Congregation Beth Shalom. B'nai Jacob's Sifrei Torah and the James Street Synagogue's cornerstone became the property of Beth Shalom. B'nai Jacob Presidents included: H. Levine J.E Sayers J.R Fogel M. Lobel J.L Arron J. Bookman J. Gladstone A. Bookman A. Sherman
Custodial History

Notes
1. 1920-1939 Board minutes were recorded in Yiddish. 2. 1930-1943 Sisterhood minutes were recorded in Yiddish. 3. Abe Finestein recalled in a telephone conversation with L. History / Biographical
Machzikei Hadas Congregation began as a small group of people who worshipped in a home on St. Patrick Street owned by Mr. and Mrs. Goldberg. They met every Shabbat, winter and summer, paying 25 cents per week for dues. Then one High Holiday, they rented a hall at the corner of Dalhousie and St. Patrick Street for one month covering Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, and charged $1.00. In 1908, approximately 15 to 20 families bought the building at 264 Murray Street, the former site of Adath Jeshurun Congregation and repurposed soda water factory of Michael Fine, and returned it to its original religious function. 264 Murray Street became the first permanent Machzikei Hadas synagogue. Laibel and Max Steinberg and Kseil and Abraham Applebaum worked on 264 Murray to transform it into a synagogue again. An $1800.00 mortgage, taken out on May 12, 1908, uses the formal name of the congregation. Signatures include Henry Levine - tailor, Nathan Wolfe - tailor, Benjamin Nathan (son) - peddler, Max Friedman - shoemaker, Max (Mendel) Lachowitz - peddler and Abraham Applebaum - carpenter. The Congregation was incorporated on July 15, 1919 as Machezike Hadath Congregation (a spelling which was later modified). In 1923, the congregation purchased two homes owned by Oscar Petigorsky at the corner of King Edward and Murray Streets. The synagogue at 259 Murray Street opened in 1929. It was during Abraham Doren's presidency from 1935-1938 that the decorative murals were installed along the women's gallery. Reverend Baker served as cantor from 1910 until his death in 1945. He was followed by Reverend Nathan Borenstein and Reverend Harry Weissbord. Rabbi Reuven P. Bulka arrived in 1967 and continued in that post into the 21st century. Machzikei Hadas relocated in 1973 to a newly designed synagogue on Virginia Drive in Alta Vista. In its new location it extends services to 500 families including youth, seniors, educational and public awareness programs. On December 27, 1973, by Letters Patent, the name was changed to Congregation Machzikei Hadas. In 1994 Machzikei Hadas congregation became the first synagogue in the history of the Commonwealth to be granted a coat of arms. History / Biographical
Temple Israel Congregation was established in 1966 and was the first reform congregation in Ottawa. The founders of the congregation were Bill Danson and Billy Danson, Myrna and Ernie Potechin, Irwin and Elaine Singer, Sam and Jean Bond and Madelyn Alexandor, all relatively new to Ottawa and determined to have a liberal reform congregation in Ottawa. They met in the spring of 1966 and by November of that year, the group had a paid-up membership of seventeen families. Bill Danso was the Pro-Term Executive and David Alexandor was elected as the congregation's first President at the first official meeting on March 12, 1967. In March, 1967 the name Temple Israel was chosen and the first consecration service was held on October 28, 1967. In this same year, the Temple Israel School, Choir, and Sisterhood were also established. Elaine Singer was the first president of the Temple Israel Sisterhood. For a period of about five years, Temple Israel was the congregation without a "home." Services were first held at the Histadrut Centre, then at the Montefiore Club with occasional large services at the Chateau Laurier or El Mirador Hotel. In September, 1971, the congregation had its first permanent home in the former B’nai Jacob Synagogue, 54 James Street. After the building's purchase, a building committee was formed, chaired by Jacqueline Holzman and included, David Alexandor, Alfred Friedman, Zeev Vered, Dr. Charles Shapiro, Barbara Sabcov, and Joe Ginsberg (president). The building was renovated and used until October, 1972 when it was badly damaged by fire. After that, arrangements were made for services in the Montefiore Club, the Jewish Community Centre, 151 Chapel Street and the Unitarian Congregation. In 1975, Temple Israel held their High Holiday services in a newly designed synagogue building on Prince of Wales Drive. Rabbi David Powell served the congregation from the summer of 1967 until June 1972, and was followed by Rabbi Donald Gerber in 1975 who was present for the dedication of the new synagogue. Rabbi Sandford T. Marcus served from 1980 - 1986, Rabbi Donald Tam 1987, Irwin Tannenbaum from 1987 to 1995. Rabbi Steven Garten was appointed in 1995. Presidents of Temple Israel include, David Alexandor, Max Strenthal, Joseph Ginsberg, and Irving Singer.

1. History of the congregation taken from “Shuls: a study of Canadian synagogue architecture: Ontario, 1979-1980" by Sheldon Levitt, Lynn Milstone and Sid Tenenbaum. 2. Bulletins received on a regular basis (with gaps). 3. Some letters in the miscellaneous correspondence between brotherhood members and sisterhood members - 1968 - 1972 (Located in Box 3) file do not indicate they are from Temple Israel, but were clipped with other correspondences that were from the congregation.

History / Biographical
The congregation of Young Israel began in 1967 as an orthodox minyan which met in the basement of the home of Rose and Moe Litwack on Kirkwood Avenue in Ottawa. When the Litwack home could no longer accommodate the number of worshipers, the congregation moved to a rented space on Merivale Road, and on March 31, 1968, the congregation dedicated its Sefer Torah received by generous donation of Gilbert Greenberg. Early in 1968, the congregation purchased a property and single story building with a basement at 627 Kirkwood Avenue. A sod turning ceremony was held in either June or August 1968, however, it is not clear if any modifications to the site were made following the ceremony. Rabbi Howard G. Messinger was the first spiritual leader serving for 2 years before the small congregation ceased to be able to support a full-time rabbi. Volunteer and part-time rabbis who were also teachers at Hillel Academy carried out leadership roles for a period of 8 successive years. They included Rabbi Millen, principal of Hillel Academy; Rabbi Pritzker, teacher; Rabbi Wolkenstein; and Rabbi Ben Natan. Rabbi Mordecai Y. Berger arrived in 1976. In the summer of 1980, a second story addition was constructed and the addition to the synagogue was dedicated August 17, 1980. As of 2016 Rabbi Galandauer serves the congregation.

History / Biographical
Albert’s Meat Market was owned and operated by brothers Morton and Archie Taller from 1955 to 1975. Morton (b. 1919, Ellenville, NY; d. 2010, Ottawa) and Archie (b. December 13,1921, Ottawa, d. March 5, 1997, Ottawa) were two of ten children born to Jacob and Ethyl Taller (nee Tallifsky). The Taller family returned to Ottawa from New York in 1921, and Morton attended Devonshire Public School and Glebe Collegiate Institute in Ottawa. Both brothers were WWII veterans who decided to use their saved service pay to go into business together after returning to Canada in 1945. The Taller brothers initially operated the West End Meat Market, located first at 989 Wellington Street and then at 1013 Wellington Street. In 1951, they moved their meat business to Albert’s Meat Market, located at 7 Mosgrove Street and ran the shop together alongside their brother-in-law Morris Saslove. At the time, Morris Saslove was the president, Morton Taller was the vice-president and Archie Taller was the secretary-treasurer, although Morton Taller later took over as president when the brothers bought the shop in 1955. Albert’s was named for its original owner, Albert Dombrowski, who originally opened the shop on Elgin Street The brothers moved the business in 1956 to a new location at 71 William Street. The William Street location was located inside a two-storey building on the former site of a hardware store, and provided ample room for storing, processing, and displaying the store’s wares. Both brothers married and started families in the 1950s. Morton married Sally (nee Landau) Taller (b. ?, d. November 28, 2021) on July 5, 1951 at Congregation Machzikei Hadas. The couple had four children; Jay, Connie (Steinberg), Beverley (Zaifman), and Lynda (Wakter). Archie married Lillian Georgie (nee Pepper) Taller (b. June 3, 1932, d. March 11, 2005) on June 8, 1952 at Congregation Adath Jeshurun. Archie and Lillian had one son, Joel Taller, who married Gaye (nee Kaiman) Taller and had three children, Adam, Jayson, and Daniel. Both brothers and their wives were active in community organizations and charities. Archie was on the committee for the formation of the UJA youth division in 1953, and Morton was a treasurer of the United Jewish Appeal in 1965. Morton was also the Israel Bonds General Chairman in the 1980s, and was presented with the Prime Minister’s Club pin by the ambassador to Israel for his work for the UJA. Lillian Taller participated in the annual Hadassah Bazaar, and was active in the Ottawa Chevra Kadisha. The Ottawa Citizen called Albert’s “literally a small meat-packing plant” due to their extensive storage and processing capabilities. The store produced their own standard and special cuts of meat, as well as their own sausages. These were sold at the store front, which included window displays, five self-service counters, and two manual-service stands when it opened. When the WIlliam St. location was first opened, all butchers were required to wear black-brimmed caps. The store employed about 30 full-time and 10 part-time staff at a time, and claimed to be the “largest quality retail fresh meat operation in Canada.” Albert’s offered customers the option to buy their meat in bulk for a cheaper price, or to have their chosen cuts of meat delivered to any part of the city. In addition to the storefront, Albert’s had a back room for processing meat, and multiple deep freezers. The store specialized in beef, and only government inspected and graded Alberta beef was accepted. The main supplier used was Canada Packers. At first, Morris Saslove would personally pick out meat at packing houses, while later on the Tallers arranged to have it delivered to the store in 40,000 lbs. carloads. After being delivered, full carcasses were moved into large storage freezers. Most of the top floor of the two-story shop was taken up by a large refrigerated room, where meat was hung for several days. This “ageing” of the meat in a temperature controlled room allowed it to tenderize without spoiling. A second cooler downstairs was used for smaller sections of meat and another building across the street was purchased, with the entire top floor used as a deep-freeze room. Buying meat in bulk allowed the Taller brothers to reduce costs. Once meat was ready to be processed, it was moved to the preparation room, where as many as 20 people could be working at one time. There was a storage room, cutting room, and pre-package room located at the rear of the shop, and carcasses were transferred from room to room by overhead tracks. After being processed, cuts of meat were heat sealed, weighed, priced and labeled by an automatic machine, then moved into refrigerated showcases in the store. The store management had a friendly relationship with the cellophane distributor Kilgours, and their representative George Fraser, who visited once a week to check the Albert’s storeroom and see how much cellophane they needed. Albert’s found their success through a “self-service” model in which customers would choose the cuts of meat that they were interested in themselves. Morton Taller claimed that this method helped to increase efficiency and improve service to the customer. The Ottawa Citizen’s price comparison of meat shops and supermarkets in 1980 revealed that Albert’s had the lowest average price for cuts of meat across the city. Morton Taller attributed their low prices to the fact that the building had been paid for early on, and the management all worked full-time at the store, reducing their costs. Morton and Archie passed over their business to Ian Mackie and Frank Bisson in 1975. Ian Mackie had previously worked for his father’s meat store Mackie’s Meat Market on Somerset St., and had a management position with Canada Packers. Francois “Frank” Bisson had worked in meat management for 26 years, also with Canada Packers. In 1986, the store was moved to 1013 Wellington St. In total, the store changed hands four times, and was run by Frank Bisson’s son Daniel until its closure in 1995.

May 15 1911 - d. unknown), Bessie Applebaum (b. February 8. 1913 - d. August 2, 1998), Jennie “Jean” Shaner (b. October 2, 1914 - d. unknown), Fanny Applebaum (b. October 12, 1916 - d. unknown), and Harold “Harry” Applebaum (b. approx. 1917 - d. February 2, 1990). The Applebaum family lived at various locations on Murray Street. They also owned and rented properties at 302-304 and 306-308 Murray St., 262-268 Nelson St., and 51-53 Douglas St., which mainly consisted of second and third-storey apartments located above businesses. B. Applebaum & Son specialized in making baking pans, garbage cans with corrugated sides, stove pipes, and furnace metals. In the 1950s, they also branched out into the air conditioning business. The business was family run, and Benjamin and Yetta’s children worked there as well as Benjamin’s brother Pinchus “Pinhey” Applebaum. In addition to her work in the family business, Yetta Applebaum was involved in charity work, and was a member of the local Hadassah chapter. The business did a significant amount of contract work with other Ottawa businesses. They were responsible for supplying all of the bread pans used by the Standard Bread Company bakery in 1925, and they completed all of the tinsmithing and duct work for the Minto Rink in 1952. B. Applebaum & Son was located on Murray Street, and the Applebaum family lived above the business. After Benjamin Applebaum’s death in 1953, his estate of approximately $52,000 was left to his six children, and his will specified that Harold Applebaum, his only son, have the opportunity to purchase the business if he was interested in doing so. Harold Applebaum continued to run the family business until 1970, when improvements in automated technologies drove them to bankruptcy.

History / Biographical
Bonnie Cleaners Ltd. was owned and operated by Harry and Sylvia Kershman from 1956-1982. Sylvia (nee Bodovsky) Kershman (b. 1926, Ottawa - ) is the daughter of Wolf Bodovsky (b. 1881 - d. 1970) and Kele Leikin Bodovsky (b. 1890 - d. 1973), proprietors of W. Bodovsky Meat Market located in the Byward Market. Sylvia grew up in Lowertown with her two older sisters; Anne Wormann (b. 1913, Russia - ) and Goldie Reva Appelbaum (b. 1922, Ottawa - d. 1977), and attended York St. Public School, Lisgar Collegiate, and Willis Business College. She began working at a young age, first in her parents’ store and then in various fruit stores in the Byward Market. After graduating from Lisgar Collegiate in 1942, she began working for the government of Canada as a clerc, first with the Dominion Bureau of Statistics on Sussex Street, then for the Royal Canadian Air Force. Sylvia participated actively in the Ottawa Civil Service Recreational Association, also known as the RA, and was the RA radio reporter on Radio Station CKCO. Sylvia was a resident of Lowertown for 38 years, and she spoke about her experiences living and working in this neighbourhood at the Ben Karp Memorial Lecture in 2002. Harry Kershman (b. August 21, 1923, Montreal - d. November 20, 1997, Ottawa) was born in Montreal, and served in the Royal Canadian Air Force during WWII. After returning from the war, he moved to Ottawa and joined his brother Judah at Judah’s Capital Commercial Laundry. He worked in clothing retail before establishing his laundry business with Sylvia. Both Harry and Sylvia were active in various Ottawa theatre groups. Sylvia participated in war entertainment shows for the RA and the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as theatre productions with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Both Sylvia and Harry participated in plays put on by the Jewish Theatre Guild and the Jewish Stage Players. The couple met at the Ottawa Hebrew Seniors Association, and were married at Machzikei Hadas Synagogue on July 4th, 1948. They had two sons, Stanley Kershman (b. 1952, Ottawa -) and John Kershman (b. 1955, Ottawa -). In addition to theatre, Sylvia and Harry led the Mogen David Cross-Country Ski Club in 1979, and Harry was president of the Hebrew Seniors Association in 1947. Sylvia was on the Committee on Mental Health of the National Council of Jewish Women in 1953. The Kershmans opened Bonnie Cleaners in October of 1956, at 51 Main Street, in Ottawa East. The couple designed the logo for their business and organized the advertising themselves. Sylvia and Harry regularly held meetings for which Harry acted as president and Sylvia acted as secretary-treasurer. In 1961, the business moved to 1061 Merivale Road, and 1971, a second location was opened at 1181 St. Laurent Blvd. As a dry-cleaning business, Bonnie Cleaners offered cleaning, repair, and fireproofing services for a variety of fabrics and materials. They were contracted multiple times by the Department of Defense and other organizations to perform dry-cleaning and fireproofing services on drapes. Bonnie Cleaners also sponsored a women’s softball team, as part of the Ottawa Women’s Softball League. The Merivale location of Bonnie Cleaners Ltd. was sold in 1981, and the St. Laurent location was sold in 1982. Both owners of the business were active in the wider dry-cleaning world. Harry and Sylvia won Canadian management scholarships from Dow Chemicals two years in a row, in 1963 and 1964, which allowed them to attend the National Institute of Dry Cleaning at Silver Springs, Mayland for four weeks with paid tuition in 1964 (Sylvia) and 1965 (Harry). Sylvia and Harry both completed a course in textiles and fabric analysis, sponsored by the dry cleaners and launderers institute of Ontario, in 1963. Harry Kershman was a member of the Jolly Belin Club, “an exclusive society of dry-cleaners.” He also received an optional Certificate of Qualification in the qualified trade of Dry Cleaner, which involved a written and practical test. Sylvia won a Prestige Builders Award from the National Institute of Dry Cleaning in 1965 “for her educational programs on the skills of the dry-cleaner in Ottawa high schools.”

History / Biographical
Wolf Abelson married Julia Rosenblum of Toronto and settled in Ottawa in the early 1900's. Both were born in Lithuania. Prior to settling in Ottawa, Wolf lived in Syracuse, New York, and in Cleveland, Ohio. Wolf grew up in Neinstadt, a town near Kovno, Lithuania. According to the Abelson family, Moses Bilsky, the first known Jewish settler in Ottawa, came from the same area in Lituania and encouraged Wolf to also settle in Ottawa. Wolf established the Rideau House Furnishing Company at 180 Rideau Street. He and wife Julia had seven children; sons Jess, Nathan and Sidney and four daughters, Birdie, Helen, Sarah and Sally. The Abelsons were members of the Adath Jeshurun Congregation and Wolf Abelson served as congregation vice-president during A. J. Freiman’s tenure as president between 1904 and 1930. Jess Abelson (1892-1975), born in Cleveland, Ohio, was an outstanding sportsman. He played football in 1913 - 1914 for the Ottawa Rough Riders and played basketball with the Y.M.C.A. He was also a member of the 1913 Canadian Champion War Canoe Team. In 1920, he became the first scoutmaster of the 39th Jewish Boy Scout Troop, one of the first Jewish scout troops in Canada. In 1920 Jess married Mollie Gray from New York. Their children included Sylvia, Lawrence, Stan, Alan (b. August 27, 1928) and Bobby. Jess was a top salesman with the Northern Life Assurance Company and in later years he was active in curling and was the founder of the Tel Aviv Tennis Club. In 1986, Jess Abelson was the first person inducted into the Ottawa Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. His influence on Ottawa and on the Ottawa Jewish community extended well beyond sports, but as a sports personality he was a paragon of excellence for young Jewish athletes. All of Jess Abelsons sons excelled in sports. Tragically, Flying Officer Lawrence "Duke" Abelson died in a training flight in England November 15, 1943 while serving in World War II. Lawrence's nickname Duke came from living on Marlborough Street, Ottawa, (Duke of Marlborough.) Duke went overseas in the fall of 1942 and with R.C.A.F. Mosquito Squadron. Alan became a lawyer, and lives and works in Ottawa.

The Sons of Israel put on this production called "Confushus Sai" at the Talmud Torah on George Street. It was a variety format with Alex Dawson's orchestra. He performed regularly at Britannia and elsewhere in the city. The S.O.I. raised money through this production for immigrants to Canada. It competed for advertising revenue with the A.Z.A. group of young men (up to age 15).

History / Biographical
Alex Polowin’s parents were Bess (Pescle) and Ben (Barel) Polowin. His father initially came to Ottawa in 1905, after serving in the Russian Japanese War. Ben Polowin chose Ottawa because his brother, Oscar Polowin, operated a wholesale produce business in the city. Ben felt unsettled, partly because of not finding a suitable wife. He returned to Lithuania, married Bess and had a family of five children. In 1926, after small farming and dealing in hides, Ben Polowin returned to Ottawa and resumed selling fruit and vegetables door to door with a horse and wagon. Bess and their five children all came over together in 1928, arriving on June 3rd at Quebec. Alex Polowin was three years old (though listed as 2 in immigration papers) and “vaguely recalled” the voyage. Eventually, the Polowin family consisted of 8 children: Dave, Ann, Hyman, Sheila, Alex, Charlie "Chuck", Freda (m. Grill), Gerry. Alex held several jobs over between the age of eight and 17 delivering bread for Mosion's Bakery, delivering prescriptions for Cohen's Pharmacy on Rideau and produce during the depression. He grew up on York Street, in the heart of Lowertown and the Jewish community. Yiddish was spoken in the home while outside the home and between brothers and sisters, English was used. As a youngster, Alex Polowin was a member of Hashomer Hatzair under the direction of Benny Bugoslovsky. He was also a member of the "Sons of Israel," an organization similar to A.Z.A. which was led by Henry Kelson. He recalled trips to Ferry Lake and Pink Lake where they would hike and camp. After attending York Street School and Ottawa Tech, he enlisted in the Canadian Navy at 17 years of age. Following training in Toronto and Halifax at HMCS Cornwallis, he was stationed at St. Johns, Newfoundland at HMCS Avalon. He became an Able Bodied Seaman, a gunner and served on HMCS Pictou, HMCS Huron and HMCS Poundmaker. He was one of 24 chosen seamen to represent the Canadian Navy at the Allied Nations Day Parade in London in 1943. It was an “exciting, colourful display with Gurkhas, Sikhs” and they marched past King George VI. The Huron crew was reviewed by King George VI when they escorted his ship from Malta to Scapa Flow. The Huron served as part of a “protection force” for four or five days in the English Channel during the Normandy Landings in 1944. They were among the most trying days of the war as they slept beside their guns on a “relaxed action stations” basis. At least five German destroyers were sunk by these allied destroyers. At other times the seamen traveled out of Plymouth in 2-4-6 or 8 destroyers. The air force would fly over the French harbors to see what ships were flashed up. On that information the allied destroyers proceeded to hunt the enemy. Goldie Roberts was very involved in sending packages to Jewish servicemen, and Alex Polowin received a package of cigarettes and chocolate from Mrs. Roberts at Murmansk. After the war, Alex Polowin finished his high school and attended a short veteran's course. He worked as a salesman for home furnishings and clothing and then became a self-employed insurance broker. He later worked with London Life. Alex passed away on August 16, 2022.
Notes
1. Alex Polowin received the French Legion of Honour, which recognizes "gallantry in the face of the enemy" in 2006. See Ottawa Jewish Bulletin January 23, 2006 article. 2. Ben Polowin and his horse, Jennie, are in Joan Finnegan’s book, p. 10, Old games, news scores. 3. Alex Polowin had a street in Barrhaven named after him in 2017.

She graduated with a BA in History from Carleton University with Highest Honours in 1998, and an MA in European History from Carleton University in 2000. Carole chose the topic of the Jewish War Orphans Committee for much of her research. This was a committee spearheaded by Lillian Freiman in the 1920s which was responsible for the rescue of 150 Jewish orphans from Ukraine. Carole chose this topic in part because she was inspired by the “well executed charity work of the Jewish community and the successful outcome of this project.” Carole’s research resulted in the creation of multiple papers and presentations, including a 1998 Honours research essay titled The Jewish War Orphans Committee of Canada - 1921, a 1999 research essay titled Building an Identity: Lillian Freiman and Charlotte Whitton, a 1998 presentation with the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society at Agudath Israel Synagogue titled “A Modern Rescue Mission: The Jewish War Orphans Committee of Canada - 1921” and a presentation at the Carleton University Underhill Colloquium in 2000 titled “The Marginality of her story is what maintains the other’s centrality: Lillian Freiman and Charlotte Whitton.”
