The Louis I. Michelson Memorial Archives of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum preserve the documentary heritage of Saint John's Jewish population. The Archives are organized thematically - synagogues, organizations, community life, and people. The Community Files contain a wealth of diverse information about the various contributions and aspects of Jewish life in New Brunswick. Saint John's Jews were very active within their own ethnic and religious community and also in the city's organizations and business life from the first arrivals in 1858 to the present day. Many community members are notable for their extensive contributions to many charitable organizations in Saint John and many of the Jewish businesses were well-known and patronized. The history of the Saint John Jewish community is presented in the Community Files section of the archive. This includes written histories by community members, most notably Dr. Eli Boyaner and Dr. Joseph Tanzman, but also by Museum staff. Information from other public records is also available including population profiles from the census and city directories. A number of themes are also represented including immigration to the city, athletes, artists and the film industry. Participation by some in city philanthropic organizations is also preserved. Education at the high school and university level and achievements in the professions are also important aspects of Jewish life in Saint John. Jewish life throughout Canada and the rest of the world is also represented in the collections, mostly from newspaper clippings and magazines. This serves to place this community into a context with the rest of the world and reflects information easily available in the local city newspapers on world events. A reunion of the now widely scattered Saint John Jewish Community, called the "Koom Ahaim", was held in Saint John in July 1984 to coincide with provincial bicentennial celebrations. This collection includes a mailing list, correspondence, and memorabilia from this major event in the community's history. Jewish men in business were led by Solomon Hart who owned a cigar factory in 1858. Similar businesses were established by the families that followed from England and Western Europe. The Eastern Europeans possessed skills and trades when they arrived, but they turned first to the peddling of goods in the countryside to earn money and also to learn English. After a few years, small shops and factories were established in the city's North end along Main Street and some later moved uptown to other parts of the city. It was a varied group of businesses where one could purchases nearly everything available, but clothing, food and manufactured goods were the most common things available. Many also sold second-hand goods and dealt in scrap metal. The history of Jewish businesses has been well-documented through the city directories, newspaper advertisements and features, and a limited number of company records. At one time a great many of Saint John's prominent merchants were Jewish, but by 2007 all fo the "original" Jewish run businesses had closed. The archives also has early business records of Isaac Selick and Sons of Moncton, New Brunswick. The Saint John Jewish community was very active in both World Wars. During the Second World War many men enlisted for the army, navy, and air force, while many women joined the Red Cross, the Canadian Women Army Corps, enlisted as nurses, or stayed in Saint John to provide assistance to the servicemen passing through the city, either in their own homes, in the Jewish Servicemen's Centre on Union Street, or in other service centres. This collection includes many of the dramatic newspaper headlines of the time, and the documents and prayer books carried by the servicemen. The richest part of the collection is that contributed by the family of Mrs. Jennie Brownberg, who was part of the Red Cross and also opened her home to servicemen.

History / Biographical
The Louis I. Michelson Memorial Archives of the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum preserve the documentary heritage of Saint John's Jewish population. Compiled by the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum, this rich resource draws on over 180 years of listings, including burials information dating back to 1873, hundreds of full text obituaries, detailed photographs of tombstones, and business and residential directory details about all the known Jewish residents of this Eastern Canadian city from 1863-1999. The Archives are organized thematically - synagogues, organizations, community life, and people. The Synagogue Records contain a wealth of diverse information concerning obituaries and burials of Saint John Jewish community members. The first Jewish resident of Saint John, New Brunswick was David Gabels who arrived with Loyalists in 1783 after the American Revolution. He established a butcher shop and bakery in the city. When he died in 1816 he was buried in what is known as the Loyalist Burial Grounds. The stone which had marked his burial site has since disappeared. A permanent Jewish presence in the city dates from the arrival of Solomon and Alice Hart from London, England in 1858. They were followed by other English Jewish families with whom they were related and inter-married, including the Green and Isaacs families. The Jewish community grew with the arrival of Jews from Eastern Europe who came to Saint John to escape persecution and poverty in their homelands and to re-establish themselves and their families in a country that offered more opportunities. The growth of the Jewish community led to the creation of two synagogues. The Ahavith Achim (Brotherly Love) Synagogue was dedicated in January 1899. Initially the congregation was drawn from the first wave of immigrants, but after 1906 most of the congregants were Eastern European. The Hazen Avenue Synagogue was established in 1906 in the wake of a social and economic split between the Western and Eastern European Jews. Most of the more assimilated and wealthy members of the community made up the congregation who purchased a former Unitarian Church. An elaborate Holy Ark was constructed for this building that was transferred to a third synagogue in 1918. The building was sold to the local school board and demolished in the 1930s. The Shaarei Zedek (Gates of Righteousness) Synagogue was formed in 1918 when the earlier congregations set aside their differences and purchased the former Calvin Church that had been built in the 1860s. At the time the building was dedicated in March 1919 there were 200 male members and perhaps more than 1500 members through the "Golden Years" of the community's history. The building included a large sanctuary with a balcony reserved for female members until the early 1960s and a large social hall. The congregation moved from the Orthodox to the Conservative affiliation in 1960 and by the late 1990s had become egalitarian. At the end of 2008 the building became the property of the City of Saint John and the congregation relocated to a building built originally as a private home and use more recently as a funeral home. This building is more suited to the Congregation's current needs and also provides space for the Saint John Jewish Historical Museum. With the death of a child in 1873, Louis Green purchased land that became known as the Green-Hart Cemetery. Only members of the Hart, Green and Isaacs families and their direct descendants were buried within these plots. Neighbouring pacels of land were purchased over the years to establish other cemeteries for the adherents of the Ahavith Achim, Hazen Avenue and Shaarei Zedek Synagogues and for small family plots. The family plots are reserved for members of the Boyaner, Gordon, Meltzer, Levine and Garson families. Collectively all of the lots are known as the Shaarei Zedek Cemetery. The cemetery grounds are maintained by the staff of the adjacent Fernhill Cemetery (lawn care, snow plowing of the roadway, opening and closing of graves, repair of stones as needed). Records of burials are also kept in the Fernhill office. In 1950, a chapel was dedicated in the cemetery to the mothers of film producer Louis B. Mayer and corporate giant, Nathan Cummings and his brother Max Cummings. Sarah Mayer and Elizabeth Komiensky are buried in the cemetery. This chapel may have been for some funeral services, but in more recent years the building has been used only rarely. A complete database of internments in the cemetery has been compiled by the Jewish Museum staff.

OBITUARIES: Daily Telegraph, April 10, 1922, microfilm # 132 Sudden Death of B.L. Amdur Leader Among Hebrews of This City, Successful Business Man and Former Rabbi Has Passed Away After Short Illness. B.L. Amdur died suddenly at the St. John Infirmary yesterday morning at 8 o’clock after having been ill for three days with pneumonia. Besides his wife, he is survived by one son and four daughters. The children are: Belle, Isadore, Mrs. I. Sydney Isaacs, Ada and Sarah. Mrs. Louis Dautch, of Buffalo, is a sister. The news of the death of Mr. Amdur is a great shock to the community, as comparatively few of his many friends knew of his illness. The late Mr. Amdur was born in Dvinsk, Russia, fifty years ago and was educated in the Riga schools. Twenty-two years ago, he came to America, having accepted the call to officiate as rabbi at the Jefferson street Temple, Buffalo (N.Y.). There he ministered for fifteen years and afterwards was Rabbi at the Bnai Jacob synagogue of Hamilton (Ont.). He then came to this city and was rabbi at the Hazen avenue Synagogue until 1912 when he retired from the ministry and entered business life. He was a talented musician of exceptional ability and conducted a music store in Union street until 1916 with considerable success. Mr. Amdur also was active in real estate ventures and carried on extensive developments at Eastmount, having erected several houses there. In 1916, he initiated a business which, in a comparatively few years, he developed with remarkable success in that from the time of his opening of his first dry goods store in West St. John, he expanded his new business so rapidly that the expansion took place at the rate of one new store opened every year until finally he was operating two stores in West St. John, and two in the city, all located at strategic points in the commercial centre, and all prospering. Lately he adopted the business policy of consolidation and concentration and leaves as a great example of business achievement two large stores in the heart of the city. Probably, in recent years, Mr. Amdur's business success has not been excelled by any other institution in this city. In private life, the late Mr. Amdur's noble character, intimate knowledge of politics, art and music and his genial, kindly manner was an inspiration to his family and won for him in the outside world a wide circle of friends, not only in St. John, but also in other parts of Canada and the eastern parts of the United States. He was held in high regard by the Canadian Jews, being recognized as one of the outstanding leaders and frequently represented this section in national Jewish conferences. Locally he was idolized by his co-religionists and at the time of his death was president of the Jewish congregation of St. John. He was a member of Carleton Union; F& A.M., and also member of the L.O.O.F. The funeral will take place from his late residence, 85 Elliott Row, at 3 o'clock this afternoon to the Carleton street synagogue, where services will be conducted by Rabbi Weiner. The funeral will be attended by delegations from the Masonic and Odd Fellows fraternities. Funerals The funeral of B.L. Amdur was held yesterday from his late residence, 85 Elliott row, to the Carleton street Synagogue, where service was conducted by Rabbi Weiner. Interment was in Fernhill cemetery. The funeral was attended by members of the Masonic and Odd Fellows' fraternities, and many friends who deeply mourn the death of a worthy citizen. Gravestone reference code(s): JM 998.61.390. Memorial plaque in synagogue: Jack and Rose Freedman - B3. Additional notes: Rabbi
