Scope and Content: Sarah Mindes' 21 diaries and 91 notebooks about literature. 4 issues of the Yiddish journal "The Future (Tzukunft)". 8 Mindes family photos as greyscale tiffs. Two electronic documents; one being the biography daughter Evelyn Shapiro wrote to her grandaughter, Sarah on her 10th birthday, and the other a speech by Evelyn Shapiro containing with a mention she made of her mother in a health care presentation, referencing Mrs. Mindes' activities on behalf of furthering access to health care before the advent of Medicare.

History / Biographical: Sarah Mindes (nee Bernstein) was born in Sheta, Lithuania in 1904. She married David Mindes, a fellow graduate of the Jewish Teachers College in Kaunas, Lithuania and both of them taught school in a small town called Malat for several years where their daughter, Evelyn, was born. The family emigrated to Canada in 1930 and settled in Montreal, while David went to Winnipeg to fulfil a 2-year contract he had made to teach in one of its Yiddish schools before returning to Montreal. In the meantime, Sarah worked in a dress factory as a sewing-machine operator. In 1941, David and Sarah opened a grocery store on Park Ave. in Montreal until they retired. Sarah Mindes began keeping a diary at the age of 15 and did so until she died at age 71, in 1975. Her early entries were written in Russian and Hebrew but soon thereafter she changed to Yiddish. She was an avid reader, an avid notetaker, an active attender at lectures and Montreal's reading circles, and an active participant in giving lectures to a variety of groups. In 1974, one year before she died, she was honoured at a formal dinner, and with a plaque for her contribution to Yiddish culture by the Montreal Chapter of the Yikuf, by the Mendele and Sholem Aleichem Layen Krisens and by the Montreal Culture and Reading Circles. Custodial History: 8 family photos scanned by Carole Ouellette as greyscale tiffs were received by email Oct 4, 2010 in advance of the papers. Also in advance of mailing the box containing her mother's notes and diaries, Evelyn Shapiro sent by email attachment two documents authored by her. Evelyn Shapiro died in 2010, shortly after this collection was received.
