- Fonds consists of Oscar Petigorsky, Sam Petigorsky, Ann Petigorsky, David Leon Petigorsky biographical information; Petigorsky Ltd. Leather and Shoe Findings documents; Sam Petigorsky’s World War II enlistment material along with artifacts, certificates, correspondence and invitations of Sam Petigorsky. Fonds also consists of a file on the Petigorsky house at 25 Stewart Street and a copy of the Jewish Daily Eagle dated 1932. It contains French, English and Yiddish articles commemorating the Centenary of Jewish Emancipation in Canada (see 1-1006).

- History / Biographical
- Oscar Petigorsky (b. 1881 - d.1970 ) was born in southern Russia near the Black Sea. He was the son of Mordecai (d. april 1921) and Esther Petigorsky (d. August 26, 1931) and received his education in cheder and the Yeshiva. He arrived in Ottawa in 1904 and worked in a variety of jobs before establishing Petigorsky Ltd. Leather and Shoe Findings, 21-23 York Street, By Ward Market, Ottawa which sold supplies to shoe makers. Oscar Petigorsky married Nina Cheigowsky and had seven children. Duborah (died at one year), Anne (b.January 16, 1907 - d. December 2, 1983), Leon (b. 1908 - d. 1964), Joseph (b. 190-? - d.1991), Minnie (b. 1911 - d. 2005), Samuel (b. 1915 - d. 2005), Lena (b. 1919 - d. 2005), Ceceli (b. 1920) He was very active in community affairs, serving as President of Machzikei Hadas Congregation between 1934-1935 and again in 1938-1939. He was also a founder of the Ottawa Hebrew Benefit Society and involved with early United Palestine Appeals. Nina Petigorsky was a strong supporter of Ottawa Hadassah Wizo. His principal community activity centred around the Ottawa Chevra Kadisha. Sam Petigorsky followed in his father’s footsteps by joining the Chevra Kadisha around 1960 and retired as gabbai rishon in 1997. Sam was born in Ottawa and remembers being one of the last to receive his bar mitzvah in the first Machzikei Hadas Synagogue on Murray Street. He attended Lisgar Collegiate, followed by a B.A. Degree (with honours) at St Patrick College in 1935. Sam served in World War II for a short time in the Royal Canadian Air Force and subsequently was a travelling representative for Petigorsky Ltd. He lived much of his life in a house built by his father with a Magen David (Star of David) in the gable end of his Sandy Hill home at 25 Stewart Street, Ottawa. Joseph married Miriam Polowin (d. January 17, 2000). They did not have children. Lena married Sydeny Schecter and had two children, Estelle and Melvyn. Ceceli married Nathan Tenenbaum and had three children, Brenda, Jeffrey, and [David]. The family moved to Detroit.

- 1. World War II material and file on 25 Stewart Street donated by Estelle Gunner. 2. Donated by Sam Petigorsky through Shirley Berman and Dawn Logan 3. Oscar Petigorsky family used “i” in their surname. Oscar’s brother, Leon, used “e” in the family surname. 4. The only Jewish classmate of Sam Petigorsky at St. Patrick College was Bennie Steinberg.
