Notice biographique / histoire administrative: David Lewis was born in Poland in 1909 and immigrated to Montreal, Canada in 1921. Member of the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation, and its national secretary and eventually president, from 1936-1960. First elected a Canadian Member of Parliament (for South York) in 1962. He was deputy leader of the New Democratic party (NPD) 1961-1971, Parliamentary Leader 1968-1969, and Federal Leader 1971-1974. After his electoral defeat in 1974 he taught and wrote his memoirs. He died in May 1981.
