- Scope and Content
- This series consists of six boxes of negatives, of which 250 files (1 box) of negatives had been entered on computer as of 1999. Five additional boxes remained to be entered as of this date. Some of the negatives were donatedwithout any identifying information, and therefore cannot be described in detail. Others were numbered rather than identified. A ledger containing negative numbers supplements this part of the collection, and where possible this information was used in cataloguing. However, further details can be gleaned by researchers wishing to use this ledger more extensively. The series contains photos of the agencies under the "umbrella" of AJCS (Allied Jewish Community Services, now known as Federation CJA). A vast number of photos portray the Combined Jewish Appeal, a major function of AJCS. This is a yearly fundraising effort which included the Operation Exodus campaign (to help bring Russian Jews to Montreal). Images in these files include the soliciting of donations by telephone at long tables and missions to Israel. Another large subgroup contains photos of the Jewish Public Library, including the J.I. Segal Awards, annual meetings, the JPL's new home at 5151 Cote St. Catherine Road (1973), a children's program, First Fruits evening, a private reception with Saul Bellow (famous Canadian author), entrance to the library and the rare books collection. There are photos of the Berman Auditorium in the Cummings Building with its wall of framed photos of those who helped found the Jewish Public Library, award ceremonies, financial seminars including men wearing kippot, (skullcaps) and women fashionably dressed. The Jewish Education Council photos depict a professional teachers' day with signs in Hebrew and French, and one of their workshops. There are photos of Hillel House (a student organization) showing the library, an auction, its Russian conference at McGill University, a dance café, and its work on behalf of Soviet Jewry. Other photos depict various events of AJCS, such as fundraising dinners, private receptions, annual meetings, conferences, lectures, portraits of well-known community leaders, Women's Federation and Young Adult Divisions, and Super Sunday (opening of annual fundraising campaign). The proportion of this series that has been processed is described on a file level in the DataEase database, form PCAT, code PC 16
