- Notes
- 1 page, double-sided. Folded once horizontally and once vertically. Document is a letter addressed to Gusztáv Weinberger from András Rosenfeld. In it, András gives news of his own family (wife and baby), as well as of his siblings, some of whom survived the war, others who did not. He mentions that he has not seen Gusztáv for ten years. He asks Gusztáv to send news of himself, and he encloses a small photograph of his family. Narrative: Donor is Elaine Kalman Naves, daughter of Gusztáv and Anikó Weinberger. Gusztáv returned from the front to learn that 34 members of his extended family, including his wife and small daughter Évike, had been deported to Auschwitz. Only one cousin returned. He remarried Anikó Schwartz and they had two daughters, Elaine and Judith. András Rosenfeld was a very good friend of Gusztáv. They did labour service together in the latter part of the war. He was originally from the same hometown as Anikó Schwartz : Beregszász, a town in Czechoslovakia with a large Hungarian minority. András returned to his hometown after the war and was thus separated from his connection with Gusztáv for many years. They corresponded and met in Budapest after the Weinberger family had immigrated to Canada, on a trip back to Hungary. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. Montreal: McGill-Queen's University Press, 1996. Print.
