- Scope and Content
- This series consists of 4 banker's boxes, accompanied by the donor's description and comments. Box 1 contains mostly research notes and documents about the Extreme Right in the U.S.A., with some information about the overflow of these groups into Canada. Groups include the Liberty Lobby, KKK, Tom Metzger, Rabbi Meir Kahane and Human Life International. Correspondence includes documentation of the groups' antisemitic views and samples of hate mail and harassment directed towards Scheinberg. Box 2 concerns the Extreme Right Project, with files pertaining to the hiring and the administration of the project. It includes a notebook kept by Scheinberg for interviews with academics and anti-racism advocates. There are also notes and documents on extreme right individuals and groups in Canada: Christian Right, Church of the Creator, Ernst Zundel, KKK, James Keegstra and Skinheads, and there are some files on groups in W. Europe. Box 3 includes a brief mimeo copy of a History of LHR (The League for Human Rights) by Lou Ronson, some B'nai Brith Canada Board files, an internal appeals case revealing differences within the organization, a file relating to the purge of formerly prominent executive members of B'nai Brith Canada (BBC), and some files on the battle surrounding Benjamin Netanyahu's proposed speech at Concordia. (Scheinberg was in the audience that day and spoke after the speech was cancelled). One file concerns the 'Michaud Affair' of 2000, in which negative comments about Jews made by Parti Québécois supporter Yves Michaud eventually led to a censure motion from the National Assembly of Quebec. Box 4 concerns the B'nai Brith League for Human Rights and aspects of its work, files A-O. A large file deals with the B'nai Brith perspective on the evolution of affirmative action in university admissions policies. There are notes from Scheinberg's frequent talks on anti-Semitism in Canada and Europe and a file on Scheinberg's 1993 participation in the B'nai Brith Canada mission to investigate the rise of Neo-naziism in Germany. There is a short lived diary for 1991-93; more on the Netanyahu speech cancellation; a file on Scheinberg's contribution to the debate over according civic honours to Abbe Lionel Groulx; talks given by Scheinberg to the Jewish communities of Costa Rica and Ecuador; and a file on homophobia, revealing the early LHR commitment to including gays within the terms of hate legislation. Scheinberg notes that 'later the alliance with the Christian Right undermined that commitment to gay rights and led to my resignation.' The last box, number 5, covers B'nai Brith topics from P-W, including, according to Scheinberg's notes: 'Head coverings in Canadian Legion Halls; Matzohgate - an incident in which the orthodox Jewish manufacturer of matzohs discharged Ethiopian Jews because these black Jews were not considered Jewish enough for the intended consumers; and the 'New Antisemitism', a concept developed by several of us, arguing that Israel had become the new target of anti-Semites'. Other files concern ethnic slurs made by Quebec politicians Lucien Parizeau and Bernard Landry after the second referendum defeat, and information about the Canadian Jewish Congress and B'nai Brith perspectives on the banning of sales of Passover Products without French labels by the Office de la Langue Française.
