- Private Carl Fried of Montreal, Quebec, was officially reported killed in action on May 23, 1944. He enlisted in Montreal in 1940. Within a few weeks after completing his basic training, he was chosen for advanced training overseas. Private Fried arrived in England in November and remained there until the North African invasion. He participated in the African, Sicilian and Italian invasions. While in Africa, he contracted malaria and was hospitalized on four occasions. After being discharged from the hospital in Barri, Italy, he was attached to the Seaforth Highlanders. He was killed while fighting on the Hitler Line in the push on Rome.
