- Notes
- 1 page, single-sided. Folded once vertically. Document is an official letter from the National Land Registry Office, issued to Gusztáv Weinberger. He is asked to send in documentation regarding his house in the village of Piricse, including copies of the land registry certificates and documentation of what his co-owners did for a living during fascist times. Narrative: Donor is Elaine Kalman Naves, daughter of Gusztáv and Anikó Weinberger. Gusztáv returned from the front to learn that 34 members of his extended family, including his wife and small daughter Évike, had been deported to Auschwitz. Only one cousin returned. He remarried Anikó Schwartz and they had two daughters, Elaine and Judith. Despite his efforts, Gusztáv did not receive any compensation for the loss of his family's property during the war. This collection of correspondence was used as part of the research for the following book: Kalman Naves, Elaine. Journey to Vaja: Reconstructing the World of a Hungarian-Jewish Family. Montreal: McGill-Queen's University Press, 1996. Print.
