History / Biographical
The Christian-Jewish Dialogue Group was founded in the early 1970s as an initiative of Bishop Gregoire, who approached Father Stephane Valiquette of the Ecumenism Centre and Rabbi Allan Langner, who was then the president of the Board of Jewish Ministers of Greater Montreal. The Centre and Father Valiquette were central to the group's work for many years, with Father Valiquette and Rabbi Langner serving as co-presidents of the committee from 1971-1977. Other Jewish members included Rabbi Mark Golub and Rabbi Howard Joseph. Sister Marie-Noelle de Baillehache served as secretary for the group in its early years. (Source: Dix ans de dialogue Judeo-Chrétien à Montréal, par Stéphane Valiquette, s.j., in Oecumenisme #64, 1982). In later years the group drew many of its Jewish members from the Temple Emanu-El and from Canadian Jewish Congress Quebec Region. The mandate of Christian-Jewish Dialogue of Montreal is to promote activities and develop projects which encourage good relations between Christians and Jews in Montreal.
