History / Biographical
Maxwell Myron Kalman was born in Montreal in May, 1906, the fourth child of Louis Kalmanovitch and Louisa Kalmanovitch (née Haimovitch), who had immigrated to Canada from Romania. Kalman studied architecture at McGill and Columbia Universities, receiving the Anglin Norcross Medal on graduation from McGill in 1931. Architect, developer, and community volunteer, he participated in the Canadian efforts in World War II by manufacturing parts for training aircraft and merchant marine submarine-detection for the Department of Munitions and Supply. Working in both commercial and residential architecture, Kalman designed Canada's first shopping centre, Norgate at Ville St- Laurent, in 1949; the Norgate housing complex was the first project invested in by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) under the National Housing Act. In the 1950s he turned to development, creating the Town of Lorraine, Québec, also supported by CMHC. His body of work has been described as a testimony to Montreal?s everyday architecture of the prewar and postwar years - notable projects include: Steinberg?s store (now Les 5 Saisons) with apartments above, at 1180 Bernard avenue, the Workmen?s Circle Centre, now the Sala Rosa, at 4848 Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the Jewish People?s School, now the College Francais, at Waverly Street and Fairmount Avenue, Canada?s first shopping centre (Norgate) in Saint-Laurent, 550 Sherbrooke Street West, the 4300 apartment complex in Westmount, and the Town of Lorraine. Kalman was active in community service as a fundraiser and volunteer, particularly for State of Israel Bonds and the United Jewish Appeal. He was awarded the Louis Marshall Gold Medal for service to the Jewish Theological Seminary, New York, in 1961. He was an active member of Shaar Hashomayim Congregation in Montreal. Kalman married Frances Golda Glasberg (May 3, 1911 - July 13, 1985), the daughter of Harry and Gertrude Glasberg. Their sons Lawrence (May 16, 1938 - May 11, 1997) and Harold attended both Westmount High School before MIT (1960) and Princeton (1964), respectively. Lawrence and Harold?s families are documented in the collection?s photographs of important events such as births, marriages, graduations, anniversaries, bar mitzvahs. In 1977, Kalman moved to Ottawa where he completed extensive research on the original Parliamentary buildings, which led to the reconstruction of the the former Speaker's Summer Pavilion, designated as the Canadian Police Memorial Pavilion, in remembrance of police officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Kalman was honoured for his concept and his perseverance at the dedication of the Pavilion by Prime Minister Jean Chretien in 1994. Kalman returned to Montreal in 2001 with his second wife, Rose Abramowitz, until her death in 2006. Kalman died in Montreal on November 27, 2009. Source: Harold Kalman.
