History / Biographical
March 22, 1932 - November 5, 2019 (Ballon's Grocery & Ballon's) Died peacefully November 5th at the Queensway Carleton Hospital, in his 87th year. Fred will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Esther, by their children Shari, Anna (Rudy), and Ben (Norma), by Fred's brother Henry (Frances) in Winnipeg, and by his many friends and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents Jack and Betty, brother Larry and sister Sheila (Marvin Blackstien). Fred and Esther took over Ballon's Dairy in the Byward Market from his parents Jack and Betty in 1967, and they ran the popular shop, making it a big cheese destination, until they retired in 1985. Fred had a great sense of humour, loved getting together with friends and family, and wintering in Florida. He was an avid photographer, recording many family events. A graveside funeral was held November 7th at the Machzikei Hadas section of the Ottawa Jewish Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Fred and Esther Ballon Fund at Hillel Lodge (613-728-3990) in memory of Fred, or to the Canadian Cancer Foundation.

History / Biographical
Allan Karp (b. 1922) was born in Ottawa, one of eight boys born to Max and Dora Karp. His parents fled Russia in 1902. Arriving at the Polish border, immigration officials changed the family name of Karpionack to Kapinsky. Max Kapinsky died prematurely so Allan and his brothers all started to work early in life. Allan attended York Street Public School and graduated from the Ottawa technical High School. He was also a member of the Maccabean Athletic Association. In 1940, he joined the air force ground crew just short of his 18th birthday. Allan was a track and field athlete in high school and continued to pursue in athletics with the Canadian air force track team participating in meets in England. While serving on the east coast of England, Germans planes came in under the clouds and machine gunned his station. A hangar roof collapsed on him and he was initially given up for dead. He survived this accident only to later be involved in an air sea rescue off the coast of Greenland where his Catalina flying boat crashed in the water and he was the only survivor. He married an English woman, Barbara Stephenson. They came to Ottawa for a few years and then returned to England and settled near Nottingham, where he first had a small shop business, and later turned to insurance.
Notes
1. Information obtained from Allan Karp in a telephone conversation in the fall of 2007 for the Maccabean Athletic Association exhibit. 2. All Kapinsky boys, except Nap, changed their name to Karp as a simplification. Nap maintained the family Kapinsky name as he was heavily involved in the Ottawa Jewish community. 3. Nine sons were born to Max and Dora Kapinsky and one son died.

History / Biographical
Ben Karp (b. 1918 d. 1991) was one of nine sons of Dora and Max Kapinsky. All, except one brother Nap Kapinsky, shortened their surname to Karp. To help with the family finances after the death of his father, Ben sold newspapers on the best location in Ottawa, Union Station and the Chateau Laurier. After graduation from the High School of Commerce where he met his future wife Etta Shulman, he worked briefly for the Government of Canada. He enlisted in the Canadian Army and was part of the infantry which liberated Holland. After a brief period of operating an IGA store, he entered the real estate business and formed his own company, Acadian Realty Co. Ltd. In 1990, Ben Karp received the Jewish Community Centre Volunteer of the Year Award for his outstanding achievement in volunteer involvement with the centre. He also was past president of Agudath Israel Congregation, a member of B’nai B’rith Ottawa Lodge since 1949 and a 36 year association with Rideau Kiwanis Club. He also served as president of the Ottawa Jewish Historical Society between 1986 and 1992.
