- Bertram (Bert) Charles Blevis Friday, February 26th, 1932 - Tuesday, January 31st, 2023 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Bertram (Bert) Charles Blevis at Hillel Lodge on January 31, 2023. Bert was born February 26, 1932, in Toronto to Abraham and Kate (Soskin) Blevis. Predeceased by his wife, Rhoda Blevis. He will be lovingly remembered by three children, Lisa Blevis Filion, Barbara Blevis (Shawn Marmer), and Mark Blevis (Andrea Ross), seven grandchildren, Rebecca Filion, Jack Filion (Madyson),Callie Filion, Benjamin Marmer, Kevin Marmer, Lucy Ross-Blevis, and Bayla Ross-Blevis, and one great-grandchild, Caleb Filion. Bert is also survived by his sister Judith (Jack) Brody and many nieces and nephews, cousins, and countless friends. He was predeceased by brothers, Earl and Leon. Bert graduated with a PhD in Physics from University College, University of Toronto, at the age of 24. After graduating, he moved to Ottawa and enjoyed a long career with the Canadian Government starting at the Defense Research Board (DRB) and later the Department of Communications. Bert was a pioneer in the Canadian space program and a key figure in the research for the Hermes satellite, the most powerful, non-military communication satellite of its kind; he and his team were awarded an Emmy in 1987 in recognition of their work. He was also involved in the Search and Rescue Satellite programs of COSPAS-SARSAT, which he refers to as one of the most successful and rewarding programs of his career. He sat on the review board for the Space Shuttle Remote Manipulator System (Canadarm). Towards the end of his career with the government, he was the Department of Communications representative on the Transition Team to plan the new Canadian Space Agency. Over the years, Bert often travelled around the world on science and technology missions, having visited all the continents with the exception of Antarctica. After retirement, he and Rhoda enjoyed further travels. Rhoda and Bert were married on April 12, 1959, and set up their home in Ottawa, with a three-year posting in the Washington DC area in the late 1960s. Bert had a great sense of humour, finding laughs in puns and wordplay. Bert took great pride in his role as "Zaidy" (grandfather), doting on his grandchildren, spending lots of time playing and napping with them, taking them to the park, and answering their many questions. Unfortunately, due to Covid travel restrictions and failing health, he was never able to meet his great-grandson. Special thanks to all the wonderful staff at Hillel Lodge for their sincere compassion and care. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the Hillel Lodge, JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation) or the charity of your choice. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 2 at 1:00 pm at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa. Funeral Service Livestream Link Shiva will be held at the home of Barbara Blevis and Shawn Marmer, 131 Wurtemburg Street, Apt 202 on Thurs. Feb 2, Sun. Feb 5, Mon. Feb 6 and Tues Feb. 7 from 7-9 p.m.

- Moishe Smith Wednesday, December 27th, 1950 - Wednesday, January 18th, 2023 It is with profound sadness that the family of Moishe Smith announces his sudden passing in Boca Raton, Florida on Wednesday, January 18, 2023, at the age of seventy two. Loved and cherished husband and best friend of Renee Bates. Predeceased by his wonderful parents Inez and Jack Smith. Most loving step-son of Linda Smith. Beloved and adored brother and brother in law of Leslie and the late Maureen, Karla and Joe Morrison, David, Anna Silverman, Leah, Eileen Smith and Fred Guzzo, Nathan and Cindy, Mark and Judy, Leiba and Michael Metz; and brother in law of Monique Bates and David Griffiths, Barkley Bates and Christelle Gauchas. Moishe will be fondly remembered by his many nieces and nephews with whom he shared wonderful relationships, and by the B’nai Brith community around the world. Moishe was a well known restauranteur and caterer in and around Ottawa. From his beginnings slicing smoked meat alongside his late father Jack, Moishe carried on the family traditions with a knife, cutting board, and his famous white chef’s coat. As much as Moishe loved life, he loved the food business. A stalwart leader for Jewish advocacy; Moishe was the youngest ever president of B’nai Brith Canada (1989-1991); and the first non US Citizen to be elected president of B’nai Brith International (2006-2009). Moishe served on many distinguished boards, including the World Zionist Organization, Canada Israel Committee, United Jewish Appeal, the Ottawa Food Bank, Ottawa Tourism, and Restaurants Canada. He was a very proud member of Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity. Funeral Service will be held at the Jewish Memorial Chapel, 1771 Cuba Avenue, Ottawa on Sunday, January 22 at 11:00 a.m. Interment at Jewish Memorial Gardens, Bank Street. Shiva will be observed at the home of Leiba and Michael Metz, 3580 Rivergate Way, Sunday through Friday afternoon.
